When we think about healthy bodies, we often just think about exercise and having a balanced diet. Do any of us think about our bones and joints when they think of a healthy body? Check Your Family History
The likelihood of getting certain medical conditions can be detected when you look at your family’s history. Are there several people in the past that suffered from osteoporosis or brittle bones? If so, then you are more likely to develop something like that. While you can do other things to help prevent it, it is good to know if you are more likely than others to get it.
Increase Your Calcium Consumption
When we talk about bones, we think of calcium, right? It is something that we are taught from a young age. So it only makes sense that more calcium in our diet can help our bone strength and bone density. You can, of course, get plenty of calcium from dairy products like cheese, milk, and yogurt. There are still plenty of ways to get calcium as a vegetarian or vegan, though. Leafy greens like spinach and kale have lots of calcium in them. It would be interesting to see if those that live in sunny climates report less rickets or osteoporosis than those that live in mixed climates. You just need to make sure that you are being safe when exposed to the sun, though. You can also get vitamin D from foods. The best foods are oily fish, egg yolks and fresh orange juice. So make sure that these things are regularly incorporated into your diet too.
Drink Less Caffeine
Studies have shown that the more caffeine we drink, the more it hinders our bodies ability to absorb calcium. So in order to avoid this, it is a good idea to cool it on the caffeinated drinks like regular tea and coffee. Having more than two a day could be detrimental to the health and strength of your bones.
