This Fire Prevention Month, ensure your family is super prepared!
October is National Fire Prevention Month and an important time to make sure your home and family are taking key safety steps and know what to do in case of emergency. The Super Prepared family is here to help! Practice fire safety and make your family “super prepared” too!
Every October my boys remind me of the importance of fire safety. They bring home materials from school that they received from the fire department school visit. They also tell me about the homework that they must do for Fire Prevention Month. This year the homework was to plan a fire escape route. So the boys drew a layout of our house and we then discussed the best way to escape if our house was on fire. I also tested the boy's knowledge of feeling for hot doors, what to do if you catch on fire and other important things. I am glad that I had a website to visit to get more information on fire safety. All this fire prevention learning brought back memories of my learning "stop, drop, and roll" along with fire drills at school. The boys thought it would be a great idea to have a practice fire drill at home.
The boys also reminded their dad to test all the smoke and CO alarms and replace the batteries in them once a year. I am glad we took the time to check the alarms as we realized that our CO alarm was over 10 years old and needed to be replaced.
We then made a safety checklist which included mom having to buy a new CO alarm along with other important items that would help us be safe in case of a fire. I was amazed at the new technology in smoke and CO alarms when I did my shopping for a new CO alarm. Some of the First Alert alarms include a long life sealed lithium battery to power the alarm for a full 10 years without replacing the battery and they need no electrical connection. This eliminates costly battery replacements and annoying low battery chirps in the middle of the night. An end-of-life alarm signals when it's time to replace the unit in 10 years.
That lithium battery sounded awesome to me as I remember many years ago when we had moved into our home and at 3 AM several of the smoke alarms started to chirp.
So I decided to replace some of our smoke alarms with new First Alert 10-Year Combination Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms. I really like that these could detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in my home. Did you know that carbon monoxide is a silent killer?
Carbon monoxide (CO) is one of the leading causes of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until it's too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first.
We also replace the smoke alarm in my son's room with this cool small smoke and fire alarm. I love that it has a 10-year battery and can be placed on the wall.
We also placed this free-standing carbon monoxide detector and this fire extinguisher on top of the fridge. I like that the carbon monoxide detector tells me the temperature and it can be wall mounted also.

Everyone in the house (aside from a couple of very young visiting grandchildren)is old enough to understand the premise of getting out first and THEN calling 911, etc. Even the bedrooms of the grandchildren would be easily entered through windows if necessary.
