Should I Wear A Face Mask When I Exercise?

Face masks are required in so many public places in so many states

I received samples Hoo-Rag to facilitate this post.

The recent C lung virus has lead to so many changes in our lives. Many states had people sheltering in place at home to reduce the spread of the respiratory lung virus. The lung virus pandemic was happening everywhere and the hospitals were overwhelmed with sick people who were on ventilators. So in attempts to keep people from catching the virus that affects the lungs, staying at home was a necessary thing for those who were not essential workers. Since I have asthma, I chose to quarantine myself at home right away. I prepared for the virus outbreak before it was a mandatory thing in my state. I wanted to not only do my part in flattening the curve but I wanted to keep myself safe from contracting a lung virus that would make breathing difficult. My asthma flare-ups already can make breathing difficult and I wanted to keep managing my asthma with natural remedies instead of medicine.

Face masks could reduce the spread of the virus

My state at first recommended the use of a face mask and social distancing when leaving your house for essentials like food and medicine. Then as doctors and medical researchers learned more about the deadly virus, many states made the use of face masks mandatory in public places like stores, restaurants, and even parks. The medical research showed that when people wore a face mask it could help reduce the spread of a virus since airborne viruses could spread up to 15 feet or more depending on the transmission of the virus. Even something like talking could spread the airborne lung virus. Many people wanted to stay healthy so they started wearing many types of cloth face masks, including tubular face bandanas. It became the new normal to see people, including children wearing face masks. I just love looking at all the different designs on the face masks while I am waiting for my grocery pick-up.

Should I wear a mask when exercising?

For some people, it was hard to understand the governor's suggestions about the use of face masks and I saw people wearing face masks while exercising. So while it was not mandatory in my city for people to wear a face mask while exercising, many people felt safer wearing a cover over their faces while walking, biking, or running, especially while in crowded places. So that made me the question, is it safe to wear a face mask while exercising?

I have a hard time wearing a face mask as I find it hard to breathe with the mask covering my mouth and nose. This might have something to do with my asthma  So I personally choose to exercise away from people as exercising with asthma already has its challenges. Exercise benefits asthma so I did not want to stop my fitness routine.

Face masks are about respecting others

I knew that wearing a face mask was about respecting others and not spreading germs if I was sick. Most people are contagious with the C lung virus before they show any symptoms like fever or coughing. So a face mask can prevent the spread of germs from your body to another person so I chose to wear a face mask when picking up my groceries and the kid's drive-up lunches. Then after I encountered people while out running and waiting to cross a busy street, I began to question how I could wear a face mask safely while running. So I discovered that I could wear a Hoo-Rag as a headband while running and then pull the cloth cover over my face if I had to stand next to another person at a stoplight.

Get over it and just put on a face mask when out in public

I see so many people complaining about business requiring you to wear a face mask. Just like the no shirt, no shoes rules, a business can make the rules about their place. If you don't like the rules then don't shop there or choose to fly with that airline. Again, it is not about you, it is about protecting others when you wear a face mask. When you choose to wear a face mask, you are showing respect to others. You could be contagious with the C Virus and could spread it to someone. Think of it like smoking. Your second-hand smoke harms other people so that is why you can't smoke in places. No one likes having to wear a face mask but no one likes to be sick either. Wear a face mask or stay home. If we all do our part, we will stop the spread of this ugly lung virus and maybe things will get back to normal faster. Make a face covering a part of your outfit and choose one that makes you smile.

My boys loved the idea of a light-weight face mask that could help stop the spread of germs and loved the fun designs on these unique face masks. The colorful mask coverings would be ideal for my boys to wear when picking up their books at the library. If face masks are required for my boys when they go back to school, the Hoo-rag face mask would be easier for my boys to wear for several hours. These bandanas can be worn so many ways that my boys would enjoy them when they don't have to be social distancing. These are moisture-wicking, lightweight, breathable & comfortable multi-use bandanas that my boys thought were cool to wear. With hundreds of patterns, these stylish face masks are teen-approved. The colorful bandana style face mask also comes in adult and kids-sized versions.

  1. I love these! I would rather my children wear these because they can wear them around their neck or as a headband when they are not near people. Personally I am for the face masks probably because people are careless down here in South Florida however, I do not know about covering my face while exercising.

  2. These are a great way to help curb the spread without suffocating while you work out. Regular masks make it so hard to exercise.

  3. Wearing a mask when you're out and about is always the best bet. A mask like this can make it easier than a tighter mask.

  4. These are great masks! I live in NYC, so I will definitely be continuing to wear a mask, even when I work out, but I think a mask like this is going to be far more comfortable.

  5. Nice masks! I personally do not when I jog. If I see others, I maintain space. But I do wear my mask when I shop or run errands.

  6. I went to the gym for the first time in 3 months yesterday. You have to wear a mask while walking to equipment but you can take it off when you do your sets. I initially was not okay with this cause UGH but it really isn't that bad!

  7. I believe in wearing a mask whenever in public right now. Yes, I would even wear a mask to the gym or when I go for a run, this COVID-19 is a vicious disease we all need to do our part to keep everyone safe.

  8. Yes face masks are important. I wear mine when necessary. I don't know if I could wear one while working out at our gym that's supposed to re-open so I may continue working out at home.

  10. I'm like you, I have such a hard time wearing masks. I feel like I can't breathe. I made cloth masks when there was a shortage, but really struggled to breathe in them. I now use the medical masks and breathe better in them.

  12. I haven't been wearing a mask when I exercise, but I've been making it a point to stay far away from people during exercise. I keep a mask with me just in case I need to pop into a store on long bike rides. These are really cute and I like the idea of headbands that double as face coverings!

  13. I personally don't think it's wise to wear a face mask when jogging as this can be very detrimental to the health.

    1. I agree so I wear the face mask as a headband. Then put it on if I am near someone while waiting to cross the street

  14. Those are cute. Here in Croatia you do not need to wear a mask anywhere, we never had to. We do not have an infected for three weeks now.

  15. I think that wearing a mask depends on how close you are to other people! I don't really know what's right! :)

  19. I think this depends on how crowded the gym is! Our gym is still close, I am not sure if they will force people to wear masks.

  21. These look like a great alternative to wearing the traditional masks that we're seeing everywhere. I have a cloth mask and it's GREAT to keep in my purse so that I can throw it on before getting out of the jeep to head into a store but I can't imagine wearing it long term. I definitely can't imagine wearing it working out - I also have asthma and I'm pretty sure that would trigger an attack REALLY quickly. I'm going to have to look into getting these!

  22. Great tips! I also wore my winter running mask or a bandana/snood from bicycle for outdoor training

  23. What a great compromise! It's challenging right now for everyone, and certainly not ideal. But I believe we will get through this! Doing the hard thing right now is the responsible thing.
