My Favorite Garden Finds For Summer

 Summer is my favorite season of the year. I just love the warmer weather and being able to wear shorts. The best part of summer is growing food in my garden! Check out my favorite garden finds that I discovered.

 Who here is a fan of summer? Who gets excited about growing food in a garden? I raised my hand for both questions as I love summer and gardening. Maintaining a backyard garden is hard work but it is so worth it. I just love that I have plenty of fresh organic vegetables and fruits to eat.

 There is just something about planting seeds and seeing them turn into food. I am that person who can't wait for morning so I can check on my plants in my swingset garden. The first thing that I do in the morning after I exercise at the gym is head outside to my garden. I water all my plants, from tomatoes and greens to watermelons and cucumbers. I get so excited when the garden plants have signs of food growing on them as that means they are closer to being ready for harvesting.

I am obsessed with gardening

 Three years ago, I started my first garden and I have learned to love growing food. Seeing my hard work turn into healthy food that I can eat is pretty amazing. Having a garden in my backyard also saves me money, especially as food costs continue to go up.

 The garden season is way too short for me. I want to pick fresh beet greens year-round but that just does not happen.  Working outside in the hot sun along with the wind can do a number on my hair. The summer heat tends to dry my hair out and it screams for moisture. So I needed to find a hair product to give my dry hair some intense moisturizing.

6. Live Worms

 My Garden Tower required worms for the composting feature to work. So, I purchased a bag of Live Red Wiggler Worms for Vermiculture & Composting online. This was my first online worm purchase for my garden. I had no idea that you could even buy worms online.

 The 100 worms came in a cloth drawstring bag filled with dirt. When I opened up the bag, the worms looked dead but once I added water to the dirt, the worms started to wake up. Worms are great for composting as they help turn the food scraps from your compost bucket into nutrient-rich food for your plants.

Come Grow With Me

 I just started my Garden Tower. It was super simple to set up. I placed the garden system on my patio and filled it up with potting soil. Then I planted my seeds. I am glad that I added the caster wheels package to my Garden Tower order. These locking wheels make moving the garden tower easy. Now I can control the amount of sun that my plants will receive.

 The summer temperatures can get quite high here in the desert. So the wheel system will allow me to move my garden to a better spot on my patio, so my plants can thrive. That will also help with my watering schedule.

My first review

The Garden Tower is very durable, and it was super easy to add the garden seeds. Depending on the plant, I added 2-3 seeds per compartment. I loved that I did not have to worry about proper seed spacing like I have to do in my ground garden space. 

 I bet you are wondering how I can grow watermelons and cucumbers in this stacking garden tower. Since I planted the seeds near the bottom of the tower, I will be able to place the plant vines of the melons on the ground, so they will have plenty of space to grow.

 Watering is super easy as you water the plants from the top of the planting system. The water then travels down to give all the plants water. I won't be able to overwater the plants as excess water goes into a pull-out drawer. This drawer also serves as the place where the compost tea gets made.

Love the inside composter

 I am super excited about the composting part of the Garden Tower. It will make composting food scraps super easy. The tower has a chamber in which I placed live worms. I bought my garden worms online from Amazon. Then I will feed the worms with my kitchen scraps and other items that are compostable like cardboard.

The worms will eat the compost pile and turn it into organic fertilizer for the plants. Even the excess water will be made into compost tea that I can use to water the plants. So I love that I can grab my kitchen compost bin and pour the contents into the Garden Tower. Having a compost pile has never been this easy!

 I don't know about you but I am so ready for warmer weather so I can start my garden. I am so anxious to plant those vegetable seeds in my backyard garden.  Last week it snowed here and the temperatures were cold. So the snow is still on the ground in my backyard. I can see my backyard from my exercise room. Things that are on my list for the month of February for garden tips are to start getting the garden beds cleaned up from last year. Here is my list of things that you can do in the winter to prepare for the gardening season.

1. Plan your garden space - decide where in your yard is the best place for a garden. Things to consider are - does the space get plenty of sunlight? If I wanted to try beekeeping in spring, is there a designated area for the beekeeping kits? If you are going to be planting on an area that has grass or other plants, now is the time to get rid of the grass or plants. I have never installed a garden drip system so I will be visiting my local garden center to get more information about what I need to buy.

5. Purchase a greenhouse - I have decided to use a greenhouse for my garden this year. A greenhouse has many benefits, one being that you can plant your garden earlier in the season. 6. Make a chart for your garden seeds - before you purchase the seeds, grab a piece of paper and make a diagram of your garden. Then decide what you will be planting. Do some research online to see which plants thrive next to each other.

This is also a good time to chat with a garden expert about prepping your soil for the garden and other items. Since the garden season has not started, the garden center employee will have more time to give you garden tips.

 Two years ago, I finally decided to give gardening a chance and I am glad that I did. For many years, I have wanted to grow vegetables in my yard but for many reasons never started a garden. I so wanted to grow organic vegetables in my yard but I just never gave gardening a chance. Then the pandemic of 2020 left me with extra time on my hands and a strong feeling of food insecurity. My youngest boys were older and no longer needed my attention. Seeing all my online friends starting gardens made me want to start a garden. The gardening bug got me and I started a garden.

Two years later ~ I am addicted to gardening

 Growing food in the Southwest has its challenges but I quickly learned how to grow veggies in a garden. The first year I grew simple plants like beet greens, kale, and tomatoes in a small garden plot near my house. I was amazed at how well my beet greens grew and I loved eating fresh green vegetables for dinner. So the next summer, I expanded my garden and made a swingset garden. I planted many varieties of vegetable seeds like chard, cucumbers, zucchini, and even watermelon! 

 My garden did well and I enjoyed eating organic food that I grew. I even started a compost pile with an old kiddie pool. I learned many things about growing plants in a garden and I even learned about garden bugs. I discovered squash bugs on my zucchini plants so I only grew 2 zucchini. I also discovered that grasshoppers love eating kale plants. Thankfully, the grasshoppers did not touch my beet greens and tomato plants. My garden gave me plenty of tomatoes, basil, and beet greens.

 In the past two years, I also discovered many fruit trees in my neighborhood and even learned how to harvest prickly pears.  Now I am in the stages of planning my garden for the summer and I am investing in some new garden items. Since I will be traveling more this year, I will be adding a water drip system to my garden. Setting up the Sunnydaze Mini Greenhouse

The greenhouse was simple to set up and I loved how easy the iron frame connected. The included metal stakes would help keep the greenhouse from blowing away on a windy day. I chose to place the greenhouse in the garden area near my house so it would have additional wind protection. I liked that the mini greenhouse had zipper doors so I could access my garden plants. In the heat of the summer, I could open the zipper doors to lower the temperature inside the greenhouse.

The cardboard will allow me to start my garden using the no-dig method. Then I will have to buy some soil and mix it with my compost soil.
