It has been a while since my last baby was born, but I remember that joyful day that happened 7 years ago. I have 5 children and I remember all their births. My children's births were filled with plenty of pain but also plenty of joy. There were many nurses who helped me to bring my children into this world. Their births would not have been possible without the help of nurses. These nurses took great care of me when I was in labor and when I pushed my baby into this world. They helped me manage the pain of childbirth and helped me learn how to take care of my new baby.
One event that I remember, of a time a nurse took good care of me, was 21 years ago when my second child was born. It was a long labor for me and my son came into the world with the cord wrapped around his neck two times. Thankfully he was fine. Since he was born at 5:30 AM, we were both worn out. The nurse took my son to the nursery so I could sleep. When it was time to feed him, the nurse brought my son to me. This was my first time breast feeding and the nurse was there to help me learn. My son had a hard time latching on and the nurse patiently helped me through the process. She showed me how to hold him in a good position to help him latch on. When that did not work, she brought me items to further help my son nurse. She did everything that she could to help my son and I succeed at breastfeeding. My son was not able to latch on to nurse, due to weak mouth muscles(we did not know this at the time), and I made the decision to formula feed. That same nurse comforted me and let me know I was still an awesome mom. She let me know I did not fail my child by formula feeding. Two and a half years later is when we discovered more about how weak my son's mouth muscles were. He was not talking and needed therapy to strengthen the mouth muscles. It was a joyful event when my child finally talked at age three and a half.

They constantly asked me what I wanted to do which I appreciated because I wanted this delivery to be done my way unlike my first delivery. They were so caring and I wish I would have known about this then because I would have nominated them!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite nurse that most stands out is Nurse Janet. When I had my first baby, everything was totally new to me and my milk wasn't coming in. She told me to start pumping (as well as having the baby suck on my breast like I was doing). After trying a couple of pumping sessions, my milk finally came in and I was so relieved. ReplyDeleteFor this last delivery (twins), it was my first c-section after 3 natural births. There was an amazing nurse in the OR who held me and helped me calm down (I was bawling) while the anesthesiologist placed the spinal. She was great, and I didn't expect that kindness over my "silly natural birthing" emotions. I have no idea of her name, so no, I didn't nominate her.

I was fortunate to have 2 that joined me during my pregnancy consistently. Both Kim and Megan, my midwife and doula were at every appointment with me and stayed with me during the birth of my son. I had a home birth so it's a little different than going through all the shift changes at a hospital and not really getting to know who is helping you. They did things that most people request family and friends to do. They gave me massages during labor and after my son was born and we were resting, they both did light house work and laundry so that my husband and I could ease into parenthood easily. I didn't nominate them but I am going to now. They were a big part of my journey and I couldn't imagine another pregnancy without them.

ReplyDeleteYes, I wish I knew her name so I could nominate her. She came into my room and consoled me when I had to be kept in the hospital 2 extra nights after my second son was born. My older son wasn't able to stay the night with us and it was my first time spending the night away from him. I was heartbroken.

ReplyDeleteMy boys are grown now and I don't remember the nurses. But one of my best and long time friends is a hospice nurse. The work she does inspires me to appreciate life and not take a single day for granted.
ReplyDeleteThere was a young nurse that would sympathize with me when I would be upset over not having my baby yet. She would assure me it would come before I knew it. And during labor, she was so kind and patient, doing all she could to make sure I was comfortable. Fifteen years later and I cherish every day with my daughter. And have never forgotten that kind nurse.
