A Guide to Food Preservation with The Harvest Vault

You have made the commitment to food preservation, and that is awesome. It feels good to have a stockpile of food. From saving money to being prepared for emergencies, food preservation is a good thing. Keep reading to learn how to take better control of your food stockpile.

Most people shop for tonight and trust that they will have food to last them for more than a week. Then an event happens that leaves them struggling to put dinner on the table. That is where food preservation comes in.

From freezing leftovers to canning summer produce, food preservation can help you feed your family for several weeks up to a whole year. While the art of preserving food seems like a simple task, one needs to consider things like rotation, inventory, and food safety. These things will help you have food that is safe to eat. The Harvest Vault is a guide that will help you with food preservation.

The Harvest Vault: A Guide to Food Preservation

The Harvest Vault is one of fifteen field journals for the working homestead. These books are structured logs, not how-to books. From compost and irrigation to poultry, fermentation, and pantry management, each volume is a working ledger designed to be kept on the bench and filled in with a pencil. These are guides that will help you be more successful in your homestead journey.

I was sent a copy of the Harvest Vault Guide to Preservation to review and share my experience with the book. As someone who has experience with food preservation, I am always looking to learn more.

My food preservation journey started with freezing leftovers and has now expanded over the past several years to gardening, composting, and freezing excess produce that I receive from my monthly church food pantry. I am slowly learning how to dehydrate food and want to start with canning.

One time I was blessed with 50 pounds of carrots, and I preserved those carrots into many items. I made carrot juice, carrot crackers, and even carrot waffles.

As my food stockpile grows, I am learning that I need to get better with my inventory and food rotation system. I am discovering that this process is quite overwhelming. When I discovered the Harvest Vault guide, it gave me a sense of control over managing the food that I have stored in my 2 deep freezers and mason jars.

No longer do I have to have a notebook with unorganized notes. The Harvest Guide is a simple system that is helping me keep better control of my food.

The Harvest Vault guide is not a picture book with pretty illustrations. This is a field manual with graph paper, dot grids, reference tables, and blank logs. You simply fill in your food details, and the guide helps you keep it all organized. The journal of your food details compounds across seasons. No longer do I  have to guess what is buried deep in my freezer or wonder how long it has been there.

The Harvest Vault helps with meal planning

I keep my guide in my kitchen, so I can reference it before I plan my meals for the week. This guide helps me to use my food from my freezers, instead of buying at the grocery store. It has also been helping me save money.

I love all the space in the Harvest Vault to keep track of my food inventory. I am able to log not only what is in my freezers but also what I have in my pantry. So I always know how many pounds of beans I have and what types of fruit and veggies I have to make my meals.

This guide has also helped me to better manage my food. I have learned to create different spaces for my surplus. From the eat first to the store for later space, I feel more in control of everything. This guide helps you keep a detailed log of your food and keeps it all in one place. It will eliminate the scrap pieces of paper that tend to get lost.

No longer will you have to wonder if this food is safe to eat. No longer will you have to dig through a deep freezer looking for roasted tomatoes for a recipe, only to discover that you used them all up.

If you want to have better control over the food that you have in your stockpile, you need to check the Harvest Vault - Hardcover Field Journal ~  https://www.thesteadingcodex.com/volumes/harvest-vault

I love the idea of meal planning. I need to start doing this. And I should probably build up some food just in case.

This is so cool and I love the idea of meal planning too and I have always wanted to learn to preserve my own food.... just in case I might need it. I want to learn to can and all of that good stuff..... just like my grandmother did. This is super cool and a great thing to know how to do too in the event you might need it! PLUS it is healthier when you prepare and preserve it yourself..... you know exactly what you put in and what you also did not :)

I hate seeing good food go to waste, especially when grocery prices add up so quickly! Food preservation is something I’d like to learn more about. Being able to save extra produce for another day would be so useful.
