The eyes are one of the most delicate organs in the body, which means that you need to take extremely good care of them at any age. Of course, the eyes of developing children can be particularly fragile, so it becomes even more important to help them look after their precious peepers. Here are some things you can to do help your children maintain healthy eyes:
Feed Them a Balanced Diet
A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, which contain vitamins and minerals which are essential for the development of healthy eyes, will help protect your children from a range of eye care problems. Foods that contain Vitamin A, in particular, can be very helpful.
Limit Screen Time
If you want to protect your children’s eyesight, you should not allow them to spend hours at a time staring at screens. Encourage them to at least take a short break after each hour spent looking at a screen, and if possible limit the overall amount of time they spend with screens to 2-3 hours per day maximum. If the children are using a computer monitor, lower the screen to slightly below their eye level to avoid eye strain injuries.
Move the TV
If your kids love to watch the TV, there is no need to stop them from doing so within reason, but you might want to move the set so that it is at least 3.5 meters away from the seating area. You should also turn on as many lights as possible so that the TV screen is not the only illumination in the room.
Improve their Glasses
If you are a glasses wearer, you can protect your vision with different lens coatings that keep out the sun, prevent glare and even filter out the blue light that is emitted by various gadgets. If your child wears glasses, it may, therefore, be a good idea to look into having their lenses coated. If your child doesn’t wear spectacles, you should, at the very least, invest in a good pair of sunglasses to shield their eyes from the sun’s harmful rays.
Prevent Them from Rubbing Their Eyes
Stopping your children from rubbing their eyes could be difficult, but it is worth trying because rubbing the eyes can lead to an introduction of all manner of germs, which are the primary cause of eye infections. If they must rub their eyes, at least make sure their hands are clean.
Ditch Unsafe Toys and Games
If you can avoid giving your kids toys and games that have sharp, jagged edges, you will significantly cut the chances of them inadvertently injuring their eyes. If you have young kids, getting rid of as many sharp edges in the home as you can will help a lot too.
Wear Safety Goggles
If your kids are going to be around anything which could cause damage to the eyes, whether that be fireworks, chemicals or anything else, you should consider making them wear some form of eye protection because even a slight injury to the eye can have devastating consequences.
When it comes to eye care, you can never be too cautious, but as you know, children rarely think about their safety when there is fun to be had. You need to instruct them and keep them out of harm’s way in any way you can.
