Could toothpaste be the cause of mouth sores? Keep reading to discover the ingredients in toothpaste that could be the cause of canker sores.
My youngest son tends to get mouth sores, known as canker sores, almost weekly. When I mentioned this to his doctor, she prescribed my son a bottle of "magic mouthwash," or what is simply milk of magnesia. The magic mouthwash is a topical lotion that is applied to the mouth sores to help numb the pain. My son hates the taste of this mouth medicine and the way it feels in his mouth.
I knew that something had to be causing the canker sores in my son's mouth, and wondered if it was something he was eating. As a mom who wants to raise my kids more naturally, I wanted to heal my son with a more natural remedy.
I recently attended a natural healthy conference to learn more about raising my family with healthy natural products. I met with a lot of companies and gained a lot of new information about new products. I also left the conference with lots of samples of products. One of those products was EarthPaste, a natural toothpaste. I was excited to try this toothpaste as it was made without fluoride.
Brushing my teeth with Earthpaste
That night, I decided to brush my teeth with the Earthpaste toothpaste. When I applied the natural toothpaste to my toothbrush, I was shocked that the toothpaste was brown. So I picked up the tube and read it to find out what was in this toothpaste. I was surprised at what was in the toothpaste, but I was even more surprised at what was not in the toothpaste.
Earthpaste toothpaste contains only five ingredients: Water, Redmond Clay, Real Salt, essential oils, and xylitol. I knew that clay was good for the body, but why was it in toothpaste? So I went to the Redmond website to find out more. I discovered that EarthPaste does not contain foaming agents, coloring, glycerin, or sodium laurel sulfate.
Through more research, I learned that sodium laurel sulfate could cause canker sores in some people. So I wondered if SLS was the reason my son had canker sores in his mouth. Could the kid's toothpaste that my son was using be the source of these mouth sores?
So I tried Earthpaste before giving it to my son. I was surprised that it had a nice cinnamon taste. I then asked my son to try the Redmond Earthpaste toothpaste to see if he liked the taste. My son loved the taste of this natural toothpaste, and I asked my son if he would use this new toothpaste for a week to see if it could help with the mouth sores. My son was willing to brush his teeth with the Earthpaste as he wanted the mouth sores to go away.
Did Earthpaste eliminate my son's canker sores?
So did the switch to EarthPaste eliminate my son's mouth sores? I am happy to say that, after two weeks of using EarthPaste, my son no longer has mouth sores. I wish I had known about how sodium lauryl sulfate causes canker sores a lot sooner.
I was so excited to find the cause of my son's mouth sores, and I reached out to Redmond to let them know. Redmond, the manufacturer of the toothpaste, sent me flavors of EarthPaste, so my son could try them all to see which one he liked best. After trying all of the different flavors of Earthpaste, my son liked the lemon flavor the best. My son was happy that Earthpaste helped us discover how to eliminate the mouth sores, and he will only use Earthpaste when he brushes his teeth.

I get them a lot, too, but only when I eat something acidic like citrus or tomato sauce.

oh this is good to know. My kids get thee all the time and I never thought it might be their tooth paste. I always thought they were eating too much acid in their foods.
Like the mineral rich and alkaline part - and the video was fun - I'll be looking at the website too.
My son had canker sores as a baby - before teeth - My doctor had me put liquid vitamin B (for babies at that time) and it cleared them up fast -
Great post
Are canker sores ulcers? If so I get them sometimes they can be quite annoying but I have never had them regularly
That's cool, that's new to me, different flavors are good to me, I'd like to try the peppermint and lemon.
We also use natural toothpaste. Simply better for our mouth and teeth.
Very interesting. I have been sticking to baking soda mostly and that works for me. Thanks.
I use natural toothpaste for about 5 years and ended up with terrible dental problems. My mouth needs the fluoride unfortunately.
I'm not familiar with the brand, but they sound like great products. My daughter also suffered from canker soars when she was young. I could have been the toothpaste she used. I'd like to try these products.
I'm not familiar with this product but it sounds like something right up our alley. May give it a try!
I had no idea toothpaste could cause canker sores. That's great this works for your son. I've been wanting to find a more natural toothpaste.
