Growing up, Carolyn was a very gifted child on course to achieve her goals set at a young age to conquer any academic challenge in her way. Her whole focus growing up was on reading and obtaining more knowledge. Perhaps Carolyn immersed herself in academics after losing her father at a young age.
While Carolyn amazed most teachers with her deep thinking, she did not know how to live life beyond her studies.
After attending college as a straight-A student, Carolyn received a full-ride scholarship to study at Oxford. It is at Oxford that Carolyn starts to see life beyond her world of literature. Brilliant but emotionally guarded Caro Drake arrives in Oxford with the singular goal of attaining her PhD, but through a turbulent friendship with a charming young man, she starts to open herself up to mystery, vulnerability, and love.

What is Joy?
While at Oxford, Carolyn discovers something that can't be found in books. A young man, through his persistence, has her questioning if is life all about deep thinking or if is there something else to life. Carolyn sees others allowing themselves to experience joy. Since Carolyn had never known about joy in her life, she searched the school library for a book about joy.
That led her to a book written by CS Lewis ~ Surprised by Joy. While this book opens up Carolyn's mind, it is a professor who helps Carolyn find the way out of her past pain and into experiencing joy.
Synopsis of Surprised by Oxford:
Caro Drake, a brilliant but emotionally guarded American student, arrives at the University of Oxford with the goal of attaining her PhD. Through a turbulent friendship with a charming young man, she begins to open herself up to mystery, vulnerability, and love.
