Car Seat Safety Tips and Child Passenger Safety Week

Car crashes are a leading cause of death for children. Most of these deaths could have been prevented with the use of a car seat, using the correct car seat, and/or with the car seat being installed properly.

Mark your calendars as September 17-23, 2023 is Child Passenger Safety Week. At the end of Child Passenger Safety Week is National Seat Check Saturday (September 23rd). This is the perfect time for parents to triple-check their little ones’ car seats to make sure that they are safe when riding in the car. Parents need to get information about car seats to make sure that they are up to date on everything from selecting the correct car seat to how to install the car seat in their car.

Even if you think that you know everything there is to know about car seats, take the time to learn more about car seat safety. Car seat safety information is always being updated with new car seat testing research. So learn the facts about car seats and keep your kids safe. This information could save a child's life.

Car crashes are a leading cause of death for children

In 2021 ~ 710 children (under 13) were killed in passenger vehicles and more than 100,000 were injured. In 2021, more than a third (36%) of children (under 13) who died while riding in passenger vehicles were unrestrained.

These are scary facts! To think that more than a third of children are not restrained in car seats. To think that using a car seat could have prevented a death or an injury. Then there are the children sitting in the wrong car seat for their height and weight who are getting injured. Worse yet, the car seat may not be installed properly or be expired/outdated.

Is your child in the correct car seat for their age?

NHTSA urges parents and caregivers to protect their child’s future at every stage of life, by making sure they secure them in the correct car seat for their age, height, and weight. Car seat laws and car seat safety are always changing so head here to make sure your child is sitting in the correct car seat ~ https://www.nhtsa.gov/campaign/right-seat

There are many car seat brands available to select from. Do your research before buying a car seat. My favorite car seat brand is Graco. This is the car seat brand that my grandchildren ride in from the time they were newborns up to five years. My oldest grandchild is five and her first car seat was the Graco SnugRide SnugFit 35 DLX Infant Car

When my daughter had baby number 2, she selected the Graco SlimFit3™ LX 3-in-1 Car Seat as it was a 3-in-1 car seat that could be used from 5 pounds up to 100 pounds. My daughter loved that this car seat can be used both rear-facing and forward-facing in the car. Check out my full review of the Graco SlimFit3™ LX 3-in-1 Car Seat. As a grandma, I love that Graco uses the most rigorous crash tests to protect my grandchildren while traveling in the car.

Graco® ProtectPlus Engineered™ is a combination of the most rigorous crash tests that help to protect your little one in frontal, side, rear & rollover crashes, and additional testing based on the New Car Assessment Program and for extreme car interior temperatures.

Grandbaby number three is on the way and the expected due date is at the end of February 2024. This grandma already has a Graco car seat for this baby. I selected the Graco Turn2Me 3-in-1 Car Seat for so many reasons, with the Turn2Me feature being one of my favorites. My daughter agrees that being able to turn the car seat makes it so easy to get the baby in and out of the car. Check out my review of the Graco Turn2Me 3-in-1 Car Seat.

What is the best car seat?

The best car seat should fit your child by age, size, and physical development. It should fit inside the vehicle and also meet all federal safety standards. Also, it should be comfortable for your child to sit in and the car seat should not be expired.

Did you know that car seats have an expiration date?

Most car seats last between six and 10 years, but car seat expiration dates vary by manufacturer. The expiration date is often printed on the seat itself; if not, check the instruction manual for each car seat you own or give the manufacturer a call.

My oldest granddaughter's current car seat used to belong to my youngest son. While using a brand-new car seat is best, using a secondhand car seat is fine as long as you know the previous owner and can verify that the car seat has never been in a crash. Also, make sure to check the expiration date on the car seat sticker.

While selecting a car seat for the future grandbaby, my daughter decided to check the sticker on the oldest child's car seat. That is when she noticed that the car seat was about to expire. So it was time to replace the car seat. My daughter selected the Graco® 4Ever® DLX Grad 5-in-1 Car Seat

The pregnancy test is positive and grandbaby number three is arriving next year and at the end of February! My daughter is pregnant with baby number three and this grandparent is so excited. I get to be a grandma to a baby again and I can't wait!

Finding out that you are expecting a baby is exciting and is a moment to be celebrated. Babies are so awesome! I remember 6 years ago when my daughter was expecting her first baby and I was going to be a grandma. Then grandbaby number two arrived in 2020. Baby #3 is due February 2024 and this grandma is already shopping for the new bundle of joy. I was gifted a car seat for the new baby and I am excited to share my review with you.

Turn2Me™ 3-in-1 Rotating Car Seat

A couple weeks after my daughter shared the good news of expecting a new baby, Graco reached out to me and asked if I wanted to check out some new baby products from Graco and Baby Jogger. Such perfect timing! I looked at the list of baby items, which included car seats, strollers, and a bassinet and decided that the Graco Turn2Me 3-in-1 Car Seat would be the best baby product to review. My daughter already had a Baby Jogger City Select 2 Stroller and a baby bassinet.

The Graco car seat arrived the other day and I was excited to check it out. I love checking out new baby products and seeing all the latest features. My youngest kids are teenagers so baby items have improved a whole lot since they were babies. I want you to check out the description of the Graco Turn2Me 3-in-1 Car Seat before I give my car seat review.

Graco Turn2Me 3-in-1 Car Seat Description

The Graco Turn2Me 3-in-1 Car Seat turns so you don't have to twist, helping you to get your baby in and out of the car with ease! Simply turn the seat to face you for easier buckling, then rotate it back to rear-facing. You'll hear it "click" back into position for a safe and comfy ride. This 3-in-1 car seat features 3 modes of use to grow with your child—from 4-100 lbs! The car seat is Graco ProtectPlus Engineered to help protect your little one in frontal, side, rear, and rollover crashes.

First Impressions of the Graco Turn2Me 3-in-1 Car Seat

My first impression of the Graco Turn2Me 3-in-1 Car Seat was this is a heavy and sturdy car seat! The car seat from Graco weighs 30 pounds, which indicates that it is made from quality materials. This is definitely a car seat that you keep in the car. While it is made for babies from birth at 4 pounds, this is not a seat that you can use to carry the baby in.

So many features that I love about the Graco Turn2Me 3-in-1 Car Seat

~ Turn2Me Feature

What made me select this car seat was the Turn2Me feature. The Turn2Me feature allows you to turn the car seat while it is in rear-facing mode to easily put the baby into the car seat. I love that you only need one hand to turn the car seat. This makes it easy to get the baby in and out of the car.

~ 3-in-1 Design

The 3-in-1 car seat features 3 modes of use to grow with your child from 4-100 lb. So you can use this baby car seat from the first ride home from the hospital all the way to a high-back booster seat.

~ 4-Position Recline

The seat's 4-position recline helps you find the right angle for your little one to ride safely at every stage. So if the baby falls asleep, you can easily recline the car seat. This feature is also great for newborn babies, no more having to worry about their little head being supported at the right angle.

~ Steel-Reinforced Frame

This car seat is made with a steel-reinforced frame that provides strength and durability for 10 years of use.

~ No-Rethread Harness System

The harness is so easy to adjust as your baby grows with a No-Rethread Harness System that has 10 positions.

~ Removable Plush Infant Inserts

The Graco car seat is so soft for your baby with plush infant inserts. The removable provides a safe, snug fit for your baby and are removable when your little one gets bigger.

~ Easy installation

The SnugLock technology helps parents install the seat in less than one minute. I love all the stickers and indicators that are all over the car seat in both English and Spanish! This is a huge help for both new parents, grandparents, and babysitters to make sure the car seat is installed correctly in the car.

The easy-to-read level indicator also helps to eliminate installation guesswork if the car seat is in the correct position.

Improvements that I would like to see on this Graco car seat

~ A harness adjustment sticker on the car seat

This car seat had so many unique features that I loved but there is one feature that the seat was lacking. The car seat needed a sticker on it to show how to adjust the car seat harness. The harness on the car seat was very tight and snug when I took the seat out of the box. I was able to figure out how to tighten the harness by pulling on the strap but I had no clue how to loosen the harness straps. There was no visible button to loosen the straps.

I had to read the instructions several times to figure things out. I was frustrated. I even joked with my husband about new parents not being able to get their baby in the car seat to leave the hospital. Finally, I found the answer to how to loosen the car seat harness in section 5 of the instruction book. As a grandma and a babysitter, I would not have the instruction book available to read. So a sticker on the car seat with instructions on how to loosen and tighten the harness would be awesome.

My daughter's reaction to the Graco Turn2Me 3-in-1 Car Seat

My daughter was excited to hear that I received a car seat for the future baby. That will be one less baby product that she will have to purchase. When I showed my daughter a photo of the car seat box, she was excited that the car seat rotated. As a mom of two kids in car seats, my daughter knows the frustration of getting the baby into a car seat.

When the new baby arrives, the older two kids will still be in car seats. So having a rotating car seat feature will make it easier to leave the house with three kids.
