Gluten Free Blueberry Pear Crisp ~ With Sweetie Pie

A delightfully sweet combination of fruit makes this blueberry pear crisp the perfect summer dessert. You will love the crunchy oatmeal topping and the sweet flavor of this fruit crisp. This recipe is both gluten-free and dairy-free.

I received a sweetie Pie to facilitate this post

Last week, while I was out walking, I discovered a pear tree that was bursting with fruit. There were so many pears on the tree that the branches of the tree were starting to sag. While the pears were not ripe, I just knew that these pears were ready to be picked. So I rang the doorbell of the house of the owners of the pear tree to ask if I could pick some pears.

Much to my surprise, my friend answered the door. My friend had been renting out the house for the past several years, and they were back in town. So after catching up, I asked my friend if I could pick some pears off their tree. My friend was delighted that I wanted some pears as they had more than they could eat. So my friend told me to pick as many pears as I wanted and that I could come back for more.

Tip: Ripen pears quickly by wrapping them in newspaper.

I love free fruit!

I am no stranger to picking fruit from fruit trees that I discover in my neighborhood. While out for my daily walks, I keep my eyes open for fruit trees. Once I spot a tree with fruit, I ask the owner if I can pick some fruit off their tree.

Most of the time, people say yes and take as much fruit as you want. The homeowners are glad that I am picking the excess fruit from the tree. That way, there is less fruit to clean up off the ground.

Last year, I discovered plum and peach trees when I was running with my boys. I froze most of the plums and made homemade peach leather with the peaches. I also discovered prickly pear cactus plants that were bursting with prickly pears. I had never tried prickly pears before, let alone harvest prickly pears. So I learned how to harvest and prepare prickly pear fruits. That was an adventure, and I have a freezer full of those sweet purple fruits.

This summer, my friend told me about an apricot tree that was in her neighborhood. The person who owned the apricot tree was overjoyed that I wanted to pick apricots from her tree. The lady told me how the apricot tree grew from an apricot seed that her son planted. After I froze all the apricots, I planted a couple of the apricot seeds in my backyard. Maybe I will have a tree that grows apricots in my yard next year. I am enjoying growing food in my Southwest garden, and I have plans for a bigger garden next year.

Sweetie Pie makes the best pie dish!

My husband and I have been enjoying the sweet pears. While the pears that I have been using in my smoothies can be mushy or underripe, my husband likes his pears ripe. Pears are a fruit that can be hard to ripen. One day they are hard, and the next day the pears are mushy. So I have discovered a trick to ripen the pears to perfection. Wrap the pears in newspaper and place them in a box. In a couple of days, the pears will be ready to eat.

While I was waiting for my pears to get ripe, my Sweetie Pie Pan arrived. I was excited to make a pie in this ceramic pie pan. This cute stoneware pie plate distributes heat evenly and produces golden-brown crusts. The wavy rim of the pie pan would make a beautiful crimped crust. I really liked that I could bake with the Sweet Pie under the broiler. The stoneware material of the pie plate allows Sweetie Pie to travel safely from the freezer to the oven.

When life hands you plenty of pears ~ make a pear crisp

I decided to make a blueberry pear crisp. My family has been enjoying my No Peel Apple Crisp, so I knew that they would enjoy a crisp made with pears. Since pears are not as sweet as apples, I knew that I needed to add another fruit to my pear crisp. I then remembered that I had some blueberries in my freezer.

Blueberry Pear Crisp is

+ Sweet

+ A perfect summer dessert

+ Dairy-free

+ Gluten-free

+ Healthy

+ Full of fiber

+ Loaded with vitamin C

+ Vegan

+ Plant-based

So I made my blueberry pear crisp using my apple crisp recipe. I just swapped out the apples for the pears and added blueberries. I also added some cornstarch to the chopped fruit, as blueberries have more liquid when baking.

I chopped the pears into pieces and left the peels on. I knew that the peels would soften while baking. Then I stirred in the blueberries and other ingredients. I just love how the frozen blueberries were giving the pears a nice purple color. I was excited to see if baking the blueberries with pears would turn the pears into a dark purple color.

My favorite recipe for fresh pears

This blueberry pear fruit crisp is my favorite recipe that uses pears. It is a great recipe for pears that are almost ripe or overripe. You can swap out the apples for the pears if you like. My friend's pear tree still has plenty of pears on it, so I will have to pick more. I love using pears in my morning smoothies and eating them fresh. Pears also taste delicious in a salad or with a slice of cheese, make mine vegan cheese. Here is my secret on how to ripen pears quickly.

How to quickly ripen pears

+ Grab some newspaper or brown packing paper

+ Find a cardboard box

+ Place the pear in the box and cover the pears with plenty of crumpled newspaper

+ Daily check the pears to see if they are ripe

+ Pears are ripe when they change from green to yellow

+ The pears may be firm, but are soft on the inside

For additional crunch ~ sprinkle granola on top of the blueberry pear crisp after in comes out of the oven
