Over the years, I made some changes to my breakfast drink with different protein brands, some were due to discovering food allergies, while others were due to different nutritional needs. My current protein shake routine came about for convenience and the simple fact that I was hungry.

My Favorite Huel Products

My favorite Huel product is the unflavored original Complete Meal powder. This one has the amount of protein that is perfect for after the gym, and the nutrition my body needs to keep me satisfied until lunch. I like the unflavored best, so I can blend it with whatever fruit I have in my freezer.

I keep some flavored Huel powder in my pantry also, for those times that I want to make a chocolate peanut butter smoothie or when I am craving a salted caramel smoothie. The strawberry Huel powder makes the best protein ice cream.

My favorite on-the-go Huel products

I always have several flavors of the Huel Hot & Savory meals in my pantry for on-the-go meals. These packages take up little space in my suitcase and are so easy to make with hot water. The texture of the meals is the best. I have even enjoyed them in the airport lounge. My favorites are the Yellow Coconut Curry and the Spicy Indian Curry.

My Favorite Swanson Supplements For Fitness

When it comes to a healthy body and fitness, I am all for using supplements. Many supplements can help your body perform better and recover faster. Keep reading to discover my favorite fitness supplements.

As someone who is passionate about daily fitness for a healthy body, I love sharing my opinions on the products that I use. I like to inform others so they can see the benefits of these fitness and wellness products. I share my opinion so much that I often have friends at the gym asking me about my favorite fitness products. These folks will also ask for my recommendations for the best supplements for their body.

My friends know that I have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to health and fitness. They also know that I have plenty of experience with supplements and fitness products. They have seen my articles about fitness, and they know that I have tried many different wellness products. They also know that I do my research about a product before I use it.

I am passionate about health and fitness

I get excited about exercise and enjoy my fitness time. I am the person who loves to exercise, and I even exercise when I travel. My favorite part of traveling is running while exploring new places. I never travel without my running shoes. I also never travel without my favorite supplements.

The supplements that I include in my daily fitness plan are ones that help my body perform better and recover faster from my daily workouts. These are the supplements that I use on a daily basis. From giving me energy before I work out to helping my muscles, all the way to helping me fall asleep at bedtime.

5 Supplements for Fitness

  1. Natural Energy ~ My day starts with exercise. Many years ago, I discovered that exercising in the morning works best for me. So I start my day off with a natural energy source that contains caffeine. Caffeine gives my body the energy it needs to exercise. I have a couple of different ways to get the caffeine into my body, depending on my workout for the day.

On days that I am just doing cardio, like running or rowing, I will drink a natural energy drink that contains 100 mg of caffeine. On days that I do my strength training exercises, like weight lifting, I will enjoy a quantum bar.

  2. Hydration ~ After I exercise, I always drink a hydration drink. Exercise makes one sweat, and our body loses sodium and other electrolyte minerals that need to be replaced. If we don't replace these items, our body gets dehydrated. If you have ever sweated a ton and could not seem to quench your thirst with water, it is due to your electrolytes being unbalanced.

A hydration brand that I am enjoying right now is Swanson Simply Hydrate Electrolyte Hydration Mix. My favorite flavors are watermelon and raspberry lemonade. This hydration drink comes in individual stick packs, so I can stash them in my gym bag or pocket. I like that this drink gets its color from beets and its sweetness from monk fruit. It also has 3X the electrolytes of sports drinks, and each serving costs less than $1.00

  3. Protein Powder ~ After my workout, I make myself a protein drink. My protein drink contains protein powder, flax meal, matcha, and fruit. Protein is not only great for building muscles, but it also helps your muscles recover. If you have sore muscles after you exercise, try eating more protein.

Right now, my preferred vegan protein is Swanson Organic 100% Organic Pea Protein Powder. I like that this protein only contains organic pea protein powder and nothing else. Each scoop has 16 grams of protein. I prefer a plain protein powder so I can use it in my oatmeal and recipes.

  4. Creatine ~ I recently added creatine to my supplement routine for its ability to support lean muscle mass. Research shows that when combined with exercise, creatine helps promote a healthy body composition as you age. Creatine used to be a supplement for bodybuilders, but new research shows that everyone can benefit from this supplement.

Swanson Creatine Powder is my secret weapon for better workouts and faster recovery. This pure, unflavored powder mixes easily into your favorite drink and helps fuel short bursts of intense activity by boosting your body’s natural ATP production. That means more strength, stamina, and muscle gains—without the crash. Creatine also improves cognitive performance and reduces mental fatigue during stressful tasks in healthy adults. Swanson Health makes creatine supplementation affordable with their 200-serving container.

  5.  Magnesium ~ Magnesium is my must-have supplement to avoid insomnia. This supplement helps my body relax and fall asleep. I used to think that getting older was the reason for my sleep struggles, but once I learned that my body needed more magnesium, my insomnia went away. Right now, I am taking a magnesium supplement from Swanson Health.

Things like exercise, stress, and age can increase your need for magnesium. Signs that your body needs more magnesium are muscle cramps, insomnia, and even constipation. So, taking a magnesium supplement is smart. Most people take their magnesium supplement before bed as it helps the body relax, but for some people, like me, magnesium can stimulate the body. If magnesium does not help you fall asleep, take your supplement in the morning. Your body will still get the benefits of magnesium.

Swanson Vitamins makes affordable supplements

Supplements do not have to be expensive to be effective. If you are looking for quality supplements at affordable prices, you need to shop at Swanson Vitamins. They have a wide variety of products, from supplements to health and beauty. They even have organic coffee.

Which Protein Powder Should I Use?

So you made the decision to use protein powder but are overwhelmed by all the choices of protein powder that are available. Keep reading to learn more about the different types of protein powder and discover which one is best for your needs.

Protein powder is a popular nutritional supplement on supermarket shelves. People purchase protein powder for many reasons. Protein is a necessary dietary item and our bodies need protein for many reasons. Protein is the building block for muscles and most people may not be meeting their daily protein needs. Increasing your protein grams may help older adults slow down the aging process.

Protein supplementation may help people meet their nutritional goals, build muscle, and lose weight. Protein powder is not just for bodybuilders. Protein powder is a healthy supplement that can be used by any age. From children to seniors, protein supplementation is a good thing. Did you know that our protein needs increase as we age?

Some Reasons people buy protein powder

+ To supplement their diet - especially good for those who don't eat meat

+ They are an athlete - protein helps muscles repair after exercise

+ They are looking to build stronger muscles - from weightlifting to weak muscles

+ To add to recipes - makes recipes more nutritious

+ To lose weight - swapping out a meal for a protein shake

I am sure there are many other reasons people choose to buy protein powder. Protein powder is not just for those who want big bulky muscles. I use protein powder on a daily basis and it has helped me be able to tone my body and increase my muscle strength. It was several years ago that I increased my protein intake, through a protein powder, to heal an injury to my ankle tendon and I was amazed that it also helped me tone my muscles. It was then that I realized that my body was not getting enough protein.

So I continue to drink a daily protein smoothie, that has 20 grams of protein after I exercise. Protein powder helps my muscles recover after I exercise and is helping my muscles stay strong. Since I am not a meat-eater, I also use protein powder and protein bars to help supplement my vegetarian diet.

So many options for protein powder, which one do I purchase?

Go to any store that sells protein powder and you will be amazed that there is a whole section filled with many types of protein powder. From whey protein powder to vegan protein powder with many other protein options in between, which one do you buy? It is not as simple as selecting the best protein powder based on price. There are different types of protein powder and one needs to make sure they are selecting the protein powder that is suitable for their protein powder needs.

Using the wrong protein powder may come with unwanted side effects as it may have ingredients in it that you may be allergic to. I discovered that it was a whey-based protein powder that made my asthma out of control. That lead to me discovering that my dairy lactose issue was a dairy allergy, thanks to a food allergy blood test. So consider food allergies when selecting a protein powder. Make sure to read the label on the container of protein powder to make sure the ingredients are safe. If you have food allergies ~ keep reading to discover a protein powder that is free of the top 8 food allergens.

Types of protein powder

I compiled a list of several types of protein powder to help you with your selection of protein powder. Many of the types of protein powders I have used or my son, who lifts heavyweights with bulky muscles, has used. The protein powder market is huge so I may not have every type of protein on my list.

This page may contain affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases

1. Whey Protein

Whey protein is derived from milk. Whey plays a significant role in building muscle and promoting muscle growth. It’s high in protein content and is packed with branched-chain amino acids that help in muscle recovery. Whey is a favorite protein powder of bodybuilders, as it is one of the best types of protein powder for building muscle.

My son's favorite whey protein is made by MyProtein. This whey protein is packed with 21g of protein per serving and is available in large quantities. So that makes it an affordable protein for him.

2. Soy Protein

If you’re lactose intolerant and allergic to milk protein, then soy protein is a good option. Soy protein powder is plant-based and has a high protein content. The best part is that it offers each of the nine essential amino acids that promote growth. It is advised not to over-consume this protein as it may mess up with the body’s estrogen levels. Soy protein is cholesterol-free.

3. Pea Protein

If you’re looking for a vegetarian source of protein, then Pea protein is a protein powder to consider.  Pea protein powder is plant-based and made from yellow peas. It is rich in fiber and also contains essential amino acids. Pea protein is good for those with food allergies to dairy, soy, eggs, and nuts.

4. Pea Protein with pumpkin seeds

If you are looking for a plant-based protein with more nutrition than pea protein, then you need to check out this Pea Protein made with pumpkin seeds and quinoa. This protein blend has a unique combination of three complex plant-based proteins. It is rich in micronutrients like manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, and folate. This type of protein is also abundant in healthy fats and protein. The combination of proteins makes it a thick protein.

A protein powder of this type is Organifi Protein Powder. Certified Glyphosate Residue Free and made with 20g of diverse protein sources ensuring it is in the all-in-one nourishing solution. This creamy, delicious complete protein has 20g of protein, has additional vitamins & minerals derived from whole-food sources like fruits and vegetables, and digestive enzymes.

5. Casein Protein

Casein protein comes from milk just like whey protein, but the difference here is that, unlike whey protein, casein is absorbed and digested at a much slower rate. So you feel fuller longer when you use casein. Casein protein is popular for weight loss! If you’re a lactose intolerant person or have a dairy allergy casein protein powder is not the best option for you.

6. Hemp Protein

Hemp Protein powder is made from the hemp seeds of "another" supplement: cannabis. Relax though as it contains very little THC, the ingredient in marijuana, so it is safe to consume. No one is going to get high off of this protein powder. Hemp seeds are not only high in protein but also omega 3 & 6. Hemp protein powder is 100 percent plant-based and easy to digest. The downside for some is the high fat count from those omegas.

Check out this delicious recipe for snack bars that contain hemp protein.

7.  Brown Rice Protein

Brown rice protein powder is a 100 percent plant-based supplement. As the name says this protein powder is made from brown rice. It is a gluten-free type of protein. This protein is low in amino acids like lysine so it is not a complete protein. So if you use this protein, make sure to combine it with another form of protein, like beans to make it a complete source of protein.

8. Almond Protein

Almond protein powder is slowly becoming a very popular choice among fitness-conscious people. It’s rich in dietary nutrients and helps in muscle growth. The best part is that almond protein is both gluten and cholesterol-free! It has a rich almond flavor so it is a good choice for baking. If you have nut allergies, then almond protein should be avoided. I recently discovered almond protein powder at the Expo East event that I attended last year. Octonuts Protein also makes a walnut-based protein powder.

9. Egg White Protein

Egg white protein comes from dried egg whites. Egg white is cholesterol-free and contains zero amount of fat. So egg white protein is good for those who are limiting fat in their diet. It can be a good protein powder for those who want to lose weight.

10. Allergy-Friendly Protein

If you have multiple food allergies, then you should check out this allergy-friendly protein powder. Nuzest Clean Lean Protein is free of common allergens, tastes great, and is a plant-based drink that’s suitable for most people! Nuzest is Vegan, Dairy-Free, Soy-Free, GMO-Free, & Gluten-Free. Nuzest's protein source is from European golden peas and is high in protein ~ 18-21 grams per serving. Chocolate Protein Bread is Allergy-Friendly

This yummy chocolate bread recipe is also allergy-friendly. So the bread contains no dairy, soy, nuts, or gluten. In fact, the chocolate bread recipe does not even use flour, so no need to buy expensive gluten-free flour. The secret to this flourless bread is swapping out the flour with a delicious plant-based protein powder. Now before you start making this bread recipe with your favorite protein powder, I need to tell you that you may not get good baking results with just any protein powder, as they contain ingredients like gums and fillers. ~  Follow the recipe. The best way to ensure the success of this healthy chocolate bread is to follow the recipe and use the exact ingredients as written. I know that these ingredients work best. I also know that Nuzest protein works best for gluten-free baking. I recommend using eggs for the best texture.

~ Use ripe bananas. The riper the better. As bananas ripen they become sweeter, This recipe is perfect for those bananas with black spots.

~ Enjoy it the next day. Sure you can enjoy a slice fresh from the oven but this bread will taste amazing the day after it’s baked as the flavors get more intense.

~ Add delicious mix-ins. For a different taste add 1/2 cup of chopped nuts for healthy fats. You can also add 1/2 cup of vegan chocolate chips for more chocolate flavor.

Storage Tips

~ This delicious chocolate protein bread can be stored at room temperature for a couple of days or in the fridge for a week. Make sure to wrap it well.

~ Freeze it for longer storage, up to three months. Double the recipe and make another bread to enjoy later. Just place the chocolate quick bread in a freezer bag or wrap it in foil. To enjoy just thaw the bread at room temperature.

To freeze: simply wrap in plastic, then tightly in foil, and finally place in a reusable bag or freezer-friendly bag for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature once you are ready to eat. You can also feel free to freeze individual slices for a quick on-the-go treat.

Why Protein Powder is Important to Your Fitness Results

Protein is an essential nutrient that we need every day. If one is active, protein becomes even more important as our protein needs increase. Some questions that are most asked are why protein is important for fitness, and how much protein do I need?

Protein is an essential nutrient that all bodies need. Protein has many roles in your body. One of the main roles of protein in the body is to help repair and build your body’s tissues. Other functions of protein are to allow metabolic reactions to take place and coordinate bodily functions. Protein also helps with fluid balance, transports nutrients, and can give the body energy when other energy sources are not available.

Proteins are made up of amino acids, and these proteins and amino acids are the main building blocks of our muscles, bones, skin, tissues, and organs.

So why do we need more protein when we exercise?

When we exercise, we use many muscles in our body. Exercise causes those muscles to get some wear and tear. So protein becomes the guy that helps build and repair the muscles. It is the protein that helps our muscles get stronger. Weightlifting basically is about stressing the muscles, and the repairing process helps our muscles grow and become stronger.

If we don't give our bodies enough protein, the muscles can not be repaired. Since protein is needed by the whole body, it is essential to consume an adequate amount of protein; otherwise, the body will have to break down muscle to obtain the amino acids that it needs to function. Exercise increases our protein needs, and if you don't consume the right amount of protein, your muscles will not become stronger or bigger. Exercise and protein promote muscle growth.

How muscles grow

Lifting weights and strength exercises in a weird way damages muscle fibers. After you work out, your body repairs or replaces damaged muscle fibers with the protein you eat. Muscle growth happens through a cellular process where muscle fibers fuse together to form new muscle protein strands. These repaired muscles increase in thickness and number to create muscle hypertrophy (growth).

Muscle growth occurs whenever the rate of muscle protein synthesis is greater than the rate of muscle protein breakdown. This adaptation, however, does not happen while you actually lift the weights. Instead, it occurs while you rest.

Increase strength to help with muscle building with adjustable ankle and wrist weights. I like using these weights when using my resistance bands. It gives me some added strength to my muscle-building exercise routine.

Protein helps with sore muscles and injuries

Exercise can result in sore muscles, and protein can help as protein helps with muscle repair. Consuming protein after you exercise will help your muscles recover from the stress of exercise and reduce muscle soreness. If you injure your muscles or tendons, make sure to increase your protein consumption as this will help with recovery.

How much protein do I need?

Your protein needs will vary based on many factors. Age, sex, height, weight, and activity level can determine how many protein grams your body needs for the day. Research suggests that a very active person should eat 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. A very active person is someone who does intense exercise 6 -7 days a week.

That means that a very active female who is 5'5" and weighs 150 pounds needs at least 68 grams/day of protein. That same person can consume up to 122 grams of protein per day. A less active person would have smaller protein needs per day. To calculate your protein needs per day check out this protein calculator.

How to best meet your protein needs

There are many different foods that contain protein. You can get protein from animal sources and from plant-based sources. While people think that animal sources contain higher amounts of protein, you don't have to eat meat to meet your daily protein needs. Those who follow a plant-based diet can get plenty of protein from beans, nuts, seeds, and plant-based protein powder.

What about complete and incomplete protein sources?

You may have heard that only meat is the best source of protein, as it is a complete protein source. A complete protein is a protein that contains a good amount of each of the nine essential amino acids required in the human diet. It is perfectly fine to get your protein from incomplete protein sources like beans and nuts, as long as you consume a sufficient variety of incomplete proteins throughout the day to get all the required amino acids. Some good combinations of plant-based protein foods are beans and rice, protein pancakes, hummus, pita bread, overnight oats, and even breakfast cookies.

So if you choose to follow a meatless diet, you can get plenty of protein from plant sources. I find that the best way to meet your protein needs on a plant-based diet is by drinking a protein smoothie or adding plant-based protein powder to recipes. When selecting a vegan protein powder, look for one that has simple ingredients without added sweeteners or fillers. I like Nuzest protein as it is made from premium yellow peas and is a complete source of protein. Nuzest has 20 grams of plant-based protein per serving.
