Don't Let The Cold Interfere With Kids Playing Outside

The leaves are changing colors and the weather is getting colder. When it gets cold outside people tend to stay indoors. Parents think that it is too cold to take the kids outside and then complain about them having way too much energy. Playing outdoors is still ok when the weather gets cold, in fact, playtime outdoors is very beneficial to your child's development year round. So bundle those kids up and get out and play. All their running around will keep them warm. I like to take my boys to the park near our house. We play at the park year round. The other day it was cold outside but the boys and I put on warm coats, hats, and gloves. I did not let the cold stop us from having fun. When the boys are playing at the park, I like to use this time as my exercise time. They play and I do laps around the park. When I am done with my laps, I then join my boys on the swings and slides. Climbing with then is fun too. It is a great way for us to get some healthy exercise and some fresh air.

I find that my boys behave better after playing at the park or going for a bike ride. My mood is also so much better after I get my exercise with my boys. I call exercise my happy therapy. Exercise also helps my brain work better too, I tend to do my best think while on a run chasing my boys on their bikes. This post is sponsored by the Voice of Play. The Voice of Play was formed to educate and promote the benefits of children’s free outdoor play and playgrounds. The Voice of Play, an education and advocacy initiative of the non-profit membership association IPEMA (International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association),wants parents to know that physical play has proven social, emotional, and cognitive benefits. I know that a good run lifts up my mood and helps me to think better so a day of having fun at the park will do the same for my boys, even in cold weather. So bundle up the kids and get out and play with them. If you join in, you will stay warmer than sitting on a bench. You too will reap the benefits of play.

This cold day was making my boys wish for snow so the could make a snowman. We don't get much snow here so when it does snow the boys go outside no matter what the temperature is. I am thinking this winter we might have to drive to the mountains and have fun sledding in the snow. This mountain trip would be a perfect break from the busy holiday season. I will join in the sledding fun as long as there are hot cocoa and cookies afterward. I remember as a kid sledding at the nearby park and how much fun it was. The cold never seemed to bother me either.

What kind of play do your kids enjoy on cold days? Do they love the snow like my boys or do they enjoy playing at the park?

So go check out the Voice of Play website and learn more about the benefits of play for kids year round. Then bundle up and get outside!

Now that my kids are a bit older, I do the same and walk laps around the park while they play. It has been great exercise for us all to get out there a few days each week.

It's summer here now but I remember as a child playing running around games outside in the cold to warm up. I guess it never really gets that cold here as I've never seen snow!

I actually don't mind the cold as much as the hot - throw a sweater and gloves on and OUT you go!

A cold weather outside with a little sun was a great one for me and I am taking advantage of that kind of weather for a nice walk.

This is such good advice. I remember always making sure we got outside when the kids were little, even when it was cold. It's so good to get the fresh air and exercise!

We always bundle up and get outside. As long as your are protected from the cold everything should be fine.

I absolutely agree, fresh air and exercise is so important! Although we have a full home gym, nothing like going outdoors, and I love the cold!

There's nothing like playing to keeo the kids active and to make learning fun for them too. I think it's important to allow them to play.

I loved the snow when I was younger but I don't like the cold lol. Still it is good to get fresh air and if your kids enjoy it why not?

My kids are all grown up now, but when they were young, I let them play and enjoy the outdoors. You only get to be a kid once! Now it is the grandchildren's turn to enjoy outdoor play time - we bundle them up and have fun in the snow.

I agree! My daughter still loves to be outside even though it's cold. She just puts on her jacket and she's good to go!

I think it's great for kids to be outside. My girls love being outdoors no matter what the weather is like. This time of year can be really fun too.

You are so right! My kids are now older, but I watch my niece and I always make sure we get outside despite weather. It makes both of us feel better.

I agree with you. It gets pretty cold here in Michigan. In fact, it was cold out the other day, but I still bundled my kids up and we went outside to the playground. It was for about 20 minutes, but they loved being outside. I have a 17 month old, so I couldn't keep him out too long.

We make it a priority to get outside every day no matter what the weather. It gets super cold here in NY but we still go out for fresh air and some play time!

I agree that children should benefit from the outside while it's cold also. I remember when I was little and my parents would send me and my sister to go and play with the sledges, at the nearby hill, in winter. It was amazing. We would fall, play with the snow, but was never cold cause our immune system was getting stronger and stronger.
