Join me on my journey to transform my master bathroom.
It all started five years ago with a broken pipe. Five years ago we had below freezing temperatures and a pipe frozen in the kid's bathroom. I live in the desert of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and our houses were not built to withstand cold temperatures so when we had a couple days of below zero temperatures, the pipe froze in the upstairs bathroom. Now I know you are probably thinking, why did I not drip the faucet. Well, I did but the pipe still froze as we later found out that the builders put the insulation on the wrong size of the pipe. So when it warmed up the pipe burst and the bathroom flooded. That meant the kids got a new bathroom. Well, of course, that made me wanting a new master bathroom. Five years later, my husband and I finally decided to spend the money and embarked on our master bath remodel.
These photos show what the bathroom looked like before we started. Our adventure to remodel the bathroom started with myself going to a conference in July. I asked my husband if he wanted to start the bathroom project. He agreed and so it started. I left my husband and the four boys home to demolish the bathroom. They had fun removing everything, including the tile. The youngest boys thought it was a blast to hammer at the walls. When I came back four days later, my bathroom was so different. All that was left was bare walls, the bathtub, and a toilet. I said to myself "what have I got myself into?" It was not a pretty sight.
My husband told me it was going to be ok. Well, it was not ok, as when they took apart the bathroom, they discovered a drain pipe between the bath and shower. This pipe made our job more complex as now we had wanted to just expand the shower but now we had to change plans and instead move the shower to where the bathtub was. My husband like that idea as it meant a bigger shower. It also meant more money and having to get some plumbing work done. We wanted our friend to do the plumbing as we knew he could do a great job and was a professional plumber. That unfortunately set our project back by four months as my husband was way too busy and kept putting off asking our friend about working for us.
After four months of not having a bathroom, I threw a tantrum and my husband finally got our friend over to do the plumbing work. We also were able to get our other friend, who is a professional carpenter, over to do the framing work. I love having friends who can help us. Once the plumbing and framing work was done, we had to have the tile people remeasure. Then we got our friend who did the framing back in to do the drywall for us. This is the current state of our bathroom as the next step is for the time people to tile the floor and construct the shower. The below photo shows the bathtub removed and new wall.
Once the tile work is done, then it will be time to paint and install the new cabinet, vanity, toilet, lights, and more. Of course, we have to still buy all those items. Now to find the time to get my husband to the store to select all the items. Until then I will browse the internet for ideas. I am hoping by the end of this year that my bathroom will be completed. It looks like it now finally coming along nicely, 4 months is quite a while. At least you can have peace of mind now!
Expanding the shower area was a very good idea, it was much better than the old design with a tub in the side.
Home renovations are both stressful and exciting. I look forward to seeing the finished product.
