The best love is a healthy heart!

February is the month of love. Most people are celebrating Valentine's day but did you know that February is also American Heart Month? It is the month to wear red to raise awareness for heart disease. February is the perfect month to promote heart health and take steps to learn about how you can take care of your heart. The heart is one of the most important organs in your body so while you are enjoying your chocolate, hopefully, dark chocolate, take some time to love your heart.

Heart disease is the leading killer of Americans, taking the lives of 2,200 people each day. In addition, 103 million adults have high blood pressure and 6.5 million are living with heart failure

Show your heart some love with these 10 tips

Everyone wants a healthy heart so try these simple lifestyle changes to give your heart the love it deserves. Some of these tips may be easier than others but make today the day that you say "I love you" to your heart and body. Treat your body with love and make your heart proud as it beats a happy beat to help pump that blood through your body.

1. Stop smoking

Everyone knows that smoking is bad for the lungs but it also harms your heart. Quitting smoking is never easy but it is the best thing that you can do to say I love me! 2. Eat smart

3. Screen for diabetes

Untreated diabetes can lead to heart disease. Diabetes can be easily discovered through a simple blood test. If you discover that you have diabetes, don't stress out as it can be managed by diet and exercise and/or medication prescribed by your doctor. Take the first step and talk to your doctor about being tested for diabetes.

4. Get active

Heart pumping physical activity not only helps to prevent heart disease but can also improve overall mental and physical health. The American Heart Association recommends five 30 minute moderate exercise sessions each week. While this may seem impossible at first, You can break up the 30 minutes throughout the day into smaller 10-15 minutes sessions. Walking is one of the best ways to exercise. Even on the days that you don't feel like working out just remember that even 10 minutes is always better than nothing. Check out 13 Simple Ways To Sneak In A Workout and Workout Tips For Stay At Home Moms to get some motivation to workout.

5. Build some muscle

Strength training is not only great for toned muscles but it is also great for the heart, it might even help you burn more calories. I was late to the weight lifting thing and when I turned 50, I realized how weak my arms were after I tried yoga for the first time. The American Heart Association recommends getting in two days of strength training each week. I have been doing simple weight lifting for a year and I am amazed at how strong my arms are and I can now do push-ups with my boys.

6. Know your numbers

Healthy weight, blood pressure, and total cholesterol all play a part in a healthy heart. Now is the time to get your blood pressure and cholesterol tested to see if they are within the guidelines. Ideal weight is different for each person depending on things like age and height so check with your doctor to determine if your numbers are heart healthy.

7. Limit junk

We all love the taste of junk food but these foods can be loaded with excess sugar, salt, and saturated fat as well as being nutrient poor. These foods, when eaten in excess, can cause weight gain, raise blood pressure and clog arteries, which are all risk factors for heart disease. So love your heart and make better choices when it comes to junk food. Limit your intake of junk food and reach for healthy food more often.

8. Stress less

Did you know that stress can be bad for your heart? Stress increases cortisol, which leads to weight gain, a key risk factor for heart disease. Stress can also make you do other unhealthy habits like smoking and over-eating. Stress can also increase the risk of anxiety and depression. Many of the items on tips on this list can also help with reducing stress. To help reduce stress make time for "me time" with meditation, music, yoga, a soak in a hot tub or a night out with friends.

9. Sleep more

Sleep is important for a healthy body as it is a chance for our body to restore. Sleep can decrease stress and stress is bad for the heart. Getting enough sleep can make us feel happy as we all know how we feel when we do not get enough sleep. Aim for 6-8 hours a night. To get help with improving your sleep habits check out these Ten Tips To Get A Better Night Of Sleep.

10. Laugh more and enjoy life

A happy heart is a healthy heart. Did you know that laughing can be great for the heart? Laughing is like a mini exercise session. It improves your mood. Also, enjoy life for a healthy heart. Do things that make you happy, like dancing or watching a favorite movie. Spend time with those you love and give out more hugs. When you enjoy life, it is easier to love your heart.

Which of these tips can you do to love your heart?

Dairy Free Lean Green Pineapple Smoothie

This fruit smoothie is perfect for a healthy treat.

I love starting my day with a healthy smoothie and usually add frozen fruit to my drink. Fresh pineapples were on sale this week at my store so I bought a couple of them. My family loves fresh pineapple and once I cut it up, they tend to eat it up quickly. My husband also loves to pack fresh pineapple in his lunch. So if I am not quick to hide some of the pineapple chunks in the fridge, there is none left for a smoothie. So I was smart and bought two pineapples this time so I could make a Lean Green Pineapple Smoothie. This delicious green smoothie tastes like a pineapple paradise and has no green taste to it. Yes, the healthy drink is still green as it is still loaded with the all the green veggies from an amazing green superfood powder that makes this drink so nutritious without a green taste. This green superfood powder also blends so well, unlike fresh kale. So you get all the benefits of the greens without a grassy taste.

I love making this lean green drink before I head to the gym as it gives me amazing energy. I also enjoy this sweet pineapple drink for breakfast and add a scoop of vanilla protein powder to it.

Dairy Free Protein Chocolate Donuts with Superfood Glaze

These donuts are a healthy alternative to store bought donuts

I do love a donut once in a while as they do taste so good. The problem is they tend to be fried in oil, making them a not so healthy treat. The other problem is they contain dairy, oh the joys of a dairy allergy! So since I like being able to breathe, (my dairy allergy causes my asthma to flare up), and avoid all that fat, I decided to try making donuts at home. I just bought a donut pan and had to try making donuts again. I made them last year without a donut pan and they resembled a mini cupcake. While my other donut recipe was delicious, it had pumpkin in it and was not vegan. While the pumpkin gave the donuts a good taste, my family knew it was in there and some members would not eat them. I also wanted to make the donuts a bit healthier as my other recipe had more oil and 3 eggs in it. So while I was on the quest to make some healthier and delicious donuts, I decided to use a different protein powder in this recipe. I discovered a vegan superfood protein powder , that has digestive enzymes, MTC oil, and a fruit & veggie antioxidant blend in it, at my last conference. I was excited that this protein powder had veggies in it as that makes getting my daily greens in super easy. This Superfood protein has a delicious chocolate taste so I knew that it would give my donuts a great chocolate taste.

This vegan protein is also great in chocolate pancakes

Use a chia egg to make vegan donuts

Is it a donut if it has no hole?

If you do not have a donut pan, you can still make these delicious treats. Just use a mini cupcake pan. If you want them to look like donuts then you really need to get a donut pan. I am glad that I bought a donut pan as I really like the donut shape. This pan makes awesome low-fat donuts! I always use a pastry bag to fill the donut pan with the batter. If you do not have a pastry bag, then a zip lock bag comes in handy. Just fill the bag up and snip off a small corner on the bottom.

To frost or not frost

Donuts are delicious without frosting but I wanted mine with frosting and since my frosting uses that amazing superfood protein all is good. Now sprinkles are a whole different story. I say treat yourself to some sprinkles as the donut has plenty of nutrition in it to counteract the sugar. I used a chocolate glaze for these delicious donut treats but you could use other flavors of glaze. I decided to play around with different color glazes and made a pretty pink glaze with MacroLife Miracle Reds Superfood powder. This nutritious powder is loaded with red and purple fruits so it gave the glaze a nice fruity taste. If you really want to be adventurous, then you could make a green frosting with the Macro Greens. The Macro Greens gave the icing a delicious taste and a pretty color. I love the power of green in my Dairy-Free Lean Green Pineapple Smoothie when it comes to getting my daily greens. This green drink is so creamy & smooth and has no green chunks in it. The Macro Greens superfood powder contains 5+ servings of fruits and vegetables so there is no need to add any kale or spinach, and it gives me awesome energy! I don't know about how you make a green smoothie but I have found that kale never gets smooth enough in a smoothie and it always clogs up my straw.

                                        The delicious power of green!

I love the color of these donuts!

The Most Delicious Healthy Protein Pancakes

Weekends are made for pancakes!

Life has been quite busy here since the holidays and I woke up this morning thinking that my family needed a lazy Sunday morning. So I skipped going to the gym and went straight to the kitchen to make pancakes. I let my husband sleep in while I got busy in the kitchen. Yes, I let my husband skip the gym that morning and it was ok as he went to the gym with me 4 days this week. My husband is getting used to working out and realizing how good he has been feeling after getting some sweat time at the gym. He still does not enjoy exercising but knows that is important for a healthy body. So this chilly Sunday morning, I woke up wanting to spend some time with my family with a delicious healthy breakfast. Wait! Pancakes are healthy? Yes, pancakes can be a part of a healthy meal when you make them with a delicious Ultimate Superfood Vegan Protein Powder.

The boys were already up when I came downstairs, so I enlisted their help to make the pancakes. My boys love cooking and I love spending time with them in the kitchen. I decided to make two kinds of pancakes for breakfast. My boys love chocolate pancakes and I am more of a plain pancake person who enjoys mine with scrambled eggs. My family thinks that I am crazy that I don't even put syrup or butter on my pancakes.

MMMMMMMMMM, chocolate pancakes are so delicious!

So I got out two bowls and instructed my boys on how to make their batter. One son made the chocolate pancake batter and the other made the plain pancake batter. The ingredients were the same for the batters except for a few ingredients. The chocolate pancake batter was made with chocolate almond milk, cocoa powder, and chocolate protein powder. The plain batter used vanilla protein powder and regular almond milk. Everything else in the batters was the same. My boys enjoyed mixing up the pancake batters. I love that that MacroMeal vegan protein powder mixes into the batter so well and adds awesome nutrition beyond 25 grams of protein. This protein powder is loaded with probiotics, antioxidants, fiber, and digestive enzymes! The pancakes still cook like the pancakes you are used too and they are light and fluffy like pancakes should be.

My recipe calls for cocoa powder but I wanted a richer chocolate flavor so I used this Finely Grated Chocolate powder. This product is made from artisanal dark chocolate and is basically dark chocolate that finely grated into a powder. This chocolate has hints of vanilla, orange, and cinnamon that adds delicious unique flavors to the pancakes It is awesome in baked goods and dairy-free hot cocoa. Since the American Heritage chocolate powder is made from dark chocolate it is also vegan.

My husband woke up to the smell of delicious pancakes cooking. He was kind of disappointed that we were out of butter and syrup but once he took a bite of the flavorful chocolate pancakes all was good. My boys decided to dip their pancakes into warmed up honey. I enjoyed my plain pancakes with scrambled eggs and a cup of coffee. I am glad that I skipped the gym as I enjoyed the time spent with my family over a breakfast of healthy pancakes.
