Slow Cooker Caramel Sauce From Condensed Milk

Caramel sauce from a can of condensed milk

I discovered a very cool way to make caramel sauce in a slow cooker and it is so easy. This caramel sauce tastes wonderful with apples and makes a great gift. All you need is a can of sweetened condensed milk (the sweet one not evaporated milk.) You place the unopened can in a slow cooker and fill with water to cover the can. I also placed foil at the bottom on my slow cooker to prevent rust stains. For best results do not buy the condensed milk with a flip top. You can also use fat-free condensed milk.

Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours. Then take the can of sweet condensed milk out of slow cooker(use tongs as it will be hot.) Then let it cool for 2 hours. When you open the can of cooked condensed milk, you will discover a sweet surprise. It is amazing that the can of milk turns into a wonderful caramel sauce. The caramel sauce needs to be stored in the fridge and it keeps for about two weeks.

This delicious caramel sauce is great with sliced apples. Here is how I served mine. This sauce would also be great with ice cream or apple pie. I once made a pear crisp with it and it was delicious.

This creamy caramel sauce also makes a great gift. Put the caramel sauce in a mason jar or any other container. Place a ribbon on the jar and pair it with some apples. Just let the person know they need to keep it in the fridge. This caramel sauce will keep for two weeks in the fridge.

Dairy Free Vegan Sloppy Joes Recipe In The Slow Cooker

Dairy-free and vegan are so delicious!

I have a lot of friends who are going meatless and being that I don't eat meat I want to help them with meatless versions of their favorite foods. I have a wonderful plant-based recipe for meatless sloppy joes that I make in the slow cooker. Not only is it meatless it uses better ingredients than you find in the can sloppy joe mix. My vegetarian sloppy joes recipe uses dried lentils that are so easy to cook. My meat-eater husband even liked my vegan sloppy joes. This vegan recipe is awesome for meatless Monday. The healthy meal recipe is also plant-based. You will love that this delicious healthy recipe is made in the slow cooker. I love making recipes in the slow cooker as it is a time saver. This vegan recipe is super easy, just place all the ingredients in the slow cooker and press start. You simply start the sloppy joes in the morning and you will have a hot dinner that is ready for you when you come home from work. This is a frugal meal that is meatless and plant-based.

Do you remember enjoying sloppy joes as a kid?

I remember my first birthday party with friends. My mom made sloppy joes for all of my friends. They were messy but amazing. As kids, we loved how they tasted. I know that my mom made the sloppy joes as they were so easy to make. Now that I do not eat meat, I am glad that I can still enjoy a childhood favorite food. The lentils are an awesome plant-based substitute for ground beef with this delicious tomato-based sauce that tastes way better than the stuff in the can. You probably have the ingredients in your pantry. All you really need is lentil beans and a can of tomato sauce along with some spices. This plant-based meal is an easy meal to make for a home-cooked meal.

You won't miss the meat

I love that this healthy recipe is also dairy-free and vegan. This vegan sloppy joe recipe has the texture of meat but the wholesomeness of lentils. Lentils are loaded with protein so this plant-based recipe is a healthy recipe. You can also make it gluten-free if you omit the bread or use gluten-free bread. If you are vegetarian and enjoy cheese, you may add some cheese to your sloppy joes.

Vegetarian Sloppy Joes

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium-size yellow onion, chopped
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 & 1/2 cups dried brown lentils, picked over and rinsed
one 15-16 ounce can tomato sauce
3 cups of water
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon black pepper

1. Heat the oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and saute for 3-5 minutes until lightly brown. Add the chili powder, stirring to coat.

2. Transfer the onion mixture to your slow cooker. Add the lentils, tomato sauce, water, soy sauce, mustard, brown sugar, and black pepper. Stir to combine. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 hours.

Serve on toasted wheat buns and enjoy! Have plenty of napkins as these are called sloppy joes for a reason.
