 My website name says it all Mom Knows Best. I am a mom to 5 children and a grandma to 2 girls. I have been raising kids for 31 years. I Am Going To Be A Grandma Very Soon

My first grandchild will be here soon!

  I am so excited that I will be able to see my first grandchild shortly after she is born. God worked in an amazing way the other day. My daughter emailed me to let me know that she is going to be induced this Friday and it was the best news ever for the grandma-to-be. I am not sure the induction is good news for my daughter but for me, it means that I am able to fly to Las Vegas for the birth of my granddaughter. This is so amazing because my daughter's original due date was August 30th and that is when we will be visiting my son in New York at the Merchant Marine Academy.  When I received my daughter's email about the scheduled inducing of her baby, I was able to buy my plane ticket at a reasonable cost and I found a hotel room also at a good price near the hospital so I could walk to see the baby from my hotel. I love that I can visit my daughter and the new baby for several days. I will also be able to be there to help my daughter's husband with trips to the store so he can stay at the hospital with my daughter. There is plenty of stores and restaurants near the hospital. I am just so excited that I can be there for the birth of the baby.

Probiotics may prevent Group B Strep

Group B streptococcus (GBS) is a type of bacterial infection that can be found in a pregnant woman’s vagina or rectum. This bacteria is normally found in the vagina and/or rectum of about 25% of all healthy, adult women. Women who test positive for GBS are said to be colonized. A mother can pass GBS to her baby during delivery.

  My daughter was diagnosed with Group B Strep so she will need antibiotics before the baby is born. New research shows that probiotics can help with Group B Strep if used throughout pregnancy. If only my daughter had taken a daily probiotic. Lemon Cupcakes With Lemon Blackberry Buttercream Frosting

                                           It's a girl!

             I received a sample from Nielsen Massey to facilitate this post.

 Last month my daughter was in town so this mom threw a baby shower for her. This was my first ever baby shower to host and I wanted it to be extra special. This is going to be my first grandchild and I am so happy that it is going to be a girl. After raising four boys, as my daughter was my only girl, I am going to have so much fun spoiling this baby girl. So what better way to start the spoiling than with a baby shower and delicious pink cupcakes. The cupcakes had to be homemade as only the best for my daughter.

  This was my first time making a buttercream frosting and I love how easy it was to make with my new pink Kitchenaid Stand Mixer. I am so glad that I finally bought one of these awesome stand mixers as they make baking so easy. I love that I can do other things as the mixer is doing its job. I had a hard time investing this much money in a small appliance but I am glad I did. I originally was just going to add the pure lemon extract to just the cake batter but once I tasted the frosting, I just felt it was missing something. So I added some lemon extract to my homemade buttercream frosting and the flavor of the frosting was amazing. You will love that I made the pretty pink color of the frosting with pureed blackberries. I no longer use the boxed cake mixes or containers of frosting as they contain artificial colors. I am trying to eliminate artificial colors from my families food even more so as the teen broke out in hives the other day after drinking a protein water that was made with red dye #40.

   The cake batter also was so delicious and easy to make. Makes me wonder why I ever bought those boxed cake mixes. The cupcakes had such a great spongey moist texture to them.

  My husband also made a beautiful fruit tray for the baby shower. He used a watermelon for the base and made the whole thing look like a baby carriage. The guests thought it was so pretty and so delicious. The guests also loved the cupcakes and my boys were so happy for the leftovers.

Lemon Cupcakes With Lemon Blackberry Buttercream Frosting

For the cupcakes:
3 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 cups sugar
3 large eggs, at room temperature
1 1/4 cups milk
2 tablespoon Nielsen-Massey Organic Pure Lemon Extract

For the frosting:
1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
3 - 4 cups powder sugar, sifted
1/2 cup frozen blackberries, thawed
1 tablespoon Nielsen-Massey Organic Pure Lemon Extract

makes 24 cupcakes

Preheat oven to 350. Line the cupcake tins with paper liners and set aside.

 In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter on medium-high speed for about 3 minutes, until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and beat for 1 more minute.

 Add the sugar to the butter mixture, 1/4 cup at a time, beating 1 minute after each addition. Mix in the eggs one at a time until incorporated.  Scrape down the sides of the bowl after each addition.  Add the milk and the lemon extract to the butter mixture and mix until combined. Add the baking soda and salt and mix on low for 30 seconds. Then add the flour, one cup at a time and mix on low until all ingredients are incorporated. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and mix for 15 seconds longer.

Fill the cupcakes liners 2/3 of the way full with batter. Bake until golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 18 minutes. Let cool in pan about 5 minutes before removing to a cooling rack to cool completely.

While the cupcakes are cooling, puree the blackberries in a small food processor. Strain the pulp out into a fine-mesh strainer. Using a rubber spatula, push the blackberry pulp through the sieve to remove the seeds. Discard the seeds, and set the pureed blackberries aside.

Using a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, cream the butter over medium speed for 1 minute. Reduce speed to low, and carefully add the powder sugar, one cup at a time. Add the lemon extract, as well as the blackberry puree. Increase speed to medium, and beat until smooth and frosting is combined. Add more powder sugar if needed to get the desired texture of frosting.

Frost cupcakes as desired and garnish with a fresh blackberry or sprinkles.

How To Remove Stains From Old Baby Clothes

Will I get the stains out of daughters old baby clothes?

  My daughter is having a baby girl this summer and I am so excited. My daughter was the oldest and only girl that I had. I had four boys after her. After I had my daughter, I saved her baby clothes in a big storage tub in the attic in hopes of using them for the next baby. So when I found out that my daughter was having a girl, I remembered that I still had her baby clothes in the attic. I thought that it would be a cool idea to clean all those cute baby girl clothes and give them to my daughter so she could use them with her baby girl. I had my teen retrieve the baby clothes from the attic so I could wash them. I was in for a surprise when I opened up the container as the clothes looked kind of gross with way too many stains and they had a bad smell to them. I was about to throw away all the baby clothes until I remembered the box of Biz on my laundry room shelf. I remembered how this powerful stain remover removed turmeric from my bathrobe and other stains from my boy's clothes so I had to see if it could remove stains from baby clothes.

The clothes had been stored in a hot attic for 20 years!

Can Biz remove all the stains from the baby clothes?

  I dumped all the stained baby clothes into my washing machine and added 5 cups of Biz powder. The website said to add 1/2-1 cup of Biz powder to one gallon of water. I then set the washing machine to warm water and soak. I started the washing machine and the machine filled up with water and agitated the clothes. My washing machine has a soak feature that is for 4 hours but I wanted a longer soak for 8 hours. Since I was home for the day, I set an alarm to restart the washing machine after for hours so the baby clothes would soak for eight hours. I wish that I could have just turned off the washing machine but my machine drains if I do that. After the eight hours past, I drained the water from my washing machine and then added 2 caps of Biz liquid along with a capful of detergent to the baby clothes. Then I did a heavy duty warm wash.

So how did the baby clothes look after soaking and washing? 

The stain on the collar on the first outfit did not get removed but the stains on the other two outfits were gone. These clothes had been stored in a hot attic for 20 years and the stains were most likely there when I stored them. The rest of the baby clothes did look nicer, especially my daughter's old blankie! The key to removing stains is pretreating before you wash them. Also, stains are harder to get out once the clothes have been put in the dryer. Biz powder is recommended for presoaking stains on clothes while the liquid is great for pretreating stains right before the wash. These two products are always in my laundry room. As a mom to 3 smelly/dirty boys, I need all the help I can get on laundry day.

  My daughter was so excited to see her old baby clothes and I am excited to see my future granddaughter wear them. This grandma to be also sent my daughter home with some Biz liquid as babies can be messy. My daughter will be able to use the Biz to spot treat the baby stains and in the whole wash for clean baby clothes.
