I was offered a sample of maca and I decided to see how this root could benefit me. When the Maca Team reached out to me about reviewing their product, they asked which product I wanted to try. It was at that moment that I learned that there are several varieties or colors of the maca root, each with its own benefits.
Maca Root Colors
Maca roots grow in 3 basic color groups: black, red, and yellow. The different colors of the maca root are only on the skin of the vegetable. Maca, also called Ginseng Andin, Peruvian Ginseng, Lepidium meyenii, or Lepidium peruvianum, is a relative of radish and smells similar to butterscotch.

Maca powder can be added to smoothies and drinks. I decided to try maca powder and I selected red maca powder. The taste of red maca tends to be sweet and mild. I added the maca powder to my protein smoothie that I made with frozen papaya. The red maca gave my smoothie a butterscotch taste similar to butterscotch pudding.
The first time I tried Maca Root Powder
After doing some research about maca benefits, I decided to try maca in my breakfast smoothie. Maca root is known to increase energy, so I wanted to experience more energy. I had just finished a tough strength-building workout at the gym, so energy was a good thing.
Thirty minutes after I consumed my smoothie with the maca powder in it, I noticed that I was getting more work done but I did not feel hyper like I would after using caffeine. I did not experience any digestive problems from the maca supplement.
Would I Use Maca Root on a Daily Basis?
I will continue to add the Maca Powder to my morning smoothie as that is an easy way to incorporate maca into my diet. I really like the butterscotch taste of maca. The benefits of maca that I like are energy and muscle building.
