What is Maca Root Supplement? How To Use It

Maca is a root vegetable from a plant that originates in the Peruvian Andes. To many people, the maca root is considered a superfood. The question is, should I use a Maca supplement? Keep reading to discover more about the maca root and its benefits.

Maca root has become a popular supplement. Maca is a relative of the radish plant and has a similar look. This root vegetable comes from a plant that grows on the high plateaus of the Andes Mountains. This root vegetable has been enjoyed by folks for at least 3000 years. Many people use this supplement for hormonal reasons but this root has many other benefits beyond that.

I was offered a sample of maca and I decided to see how this root could benefit me. When the Maca Team reached out to me about reviewing their product, they asked which product I wanted to try. It was at that moment that I learned that there are several varieties or colors of the maca root, each with its own benefits.

Maca Root Colors

Maca roots grow in 3 basic color groups: black, red, and yellow. The different colors of the maca root are only on the skin of the vegetable. Once the skin is removed from the maca root, the color is similar. Each color of maca root offers similar and unique health benefits. Each color also offers different tastes.

Maca, also called Ginseng Andin, Peruvian Ginseng, Lepidium meyenii, or Lepidium peruvianum, is a relative of radish and smells similar to butterscotch.

How To Use Maca

Common questions that people have about maca are about how to use maca and what a recommended serving size is. Maca comes in many forms, from capsules to powder to even maca chips. Each product will list the serving size.

Maca powder can be added to smoothies and drinks. I decided to try maca powder and I selected red maca powder. The taste of red maca tends to be sweet and mild. I added the maca powder to my protein smoothie that I made with frozen papaya. The red maca gave my smoothie a butterscotch taste similar to butterscotch pudding.

The first time I tried Maca Root Powder

After doing some research about maca benefits, I decided to try maca in my breakfast smoothie. Maca root is known to increase energy, so I wanted to experience more energy. I had just finished a tough strength-building workout at the gym, so energy was a good thing.

Thirty minutes after I consumed my smoothie with the maca powder in it, I noticed that I was getting more work done but I did not feel hyper like I would after using caffeine. I did not experience any digestive problems from the maca supplement.

Would I Use Maca Root on a Daily Basis?

I will continue to add the Maca Powder to my morning smoothie as that is an easy way to incorporate maca into my diet. I really like the butterscotch taste of maca. The benefits of maca that I like are energy and muscle building.
