The Short Game Is About Making Life-Altering Decisons

If you like inspirational stories about brotherhood, The Short Game is the film for you.

On the brink of his greatest victory, a high school golfer is forced to make a life-altering decision: finally realize his own personal dream or stand by his autistic brother.

Jeremy has a gift and has been working hard chasing his dream on the golf course. He feels confident that he has what it takes to get a scholarship to college. All he needs to do is keep practicing his swing, and he plans on doing that with his free time. Then life happens, and his mom announces she got a job.

Now that Jeremy's mom is working, he is responsible for his autistic younger brother. That means he no longer has the time to devote to golf. Jeremy thinks that he has to give up his dream. Then he is given some wisdom and realizes that by embracing his brother's talents, he can bring his brother with him to the golf course. Jeremy's brother becomes his caddy and helps his big brother on the golf course.

About The Short Game

Jeremy Avery is vying for a college golf scholarship awarded to the winner of the State Championship, but his preparation and game are affected by family pressures and having to take care of his younger autistic brother, Ethan. These challenges, along with the burden of carrying his team against an opponent who will do anything to win, lead Jeremy on a journey of discovery, both internal and of his brother’s savant-like gifts. On the brink of his greatest victory, Jeremy is forced to make a life-altering decision: finally achieving his own personal dreams or standing by his brother.

Watch the Official Trailer for The Short Game Movie

A Feel-Good Movie

I had an opportunity to watch this movie as I was on a long road trip to take my son to college. It brought back memories of watching my own son chase his dreams of attending a college that was out of his price range. This college was mostly for STEM majors. My son applied for a scholarship that would completely pay for his college. It was a lengthy process that started with 4000 applicants. From the 4000, it was narrowed down to 400, with 230 being selected for a full-ride scholarship.

Like the movie, my son had tough decisions to make. He had to have backup plans in case he did not get the scholarship. Through the process, my son had his doubts about whether he was good enough to attend this school. My son also questioned his field selection.

As a mom, it was hard to let my son go through this. I wanted to make his choices for him. The one thing I could do was pray for my son and enlist others to pray. When my son got the notification that he won, I was overwhelmed. Our prayers had been answered in a mighty way. When I shared the news with a friend, who was a new believer, with joy she replied, "I prayed for this!"

Watching The Short Game during a college drop-off road trip sounds like perfect timing. I loved how you connected Jeremy’s story to your own son’s scholarship journey.

This sounds like a cute movie. Almost reminds me of happy Gilmore and all his golfing adventures. I’ll have to check it out. As a mom who went to college and paid for it on my own, I highly recommend getting scholarships. Even a few smalls ones, can help out with the college expenses.
