Don't Do A Madonna: Grow Old Gracefully

While growing up is most definitely optional, growing old isn’t. It is something we all have to go through, and it’s one of only three things all humans share in common; we are all members of the human race, we all have to pay taxes, and we will all grow old. But despite this unavoidable process, a lot of fight it, desperate to stave off the appearance age, as if we can somehow turn back the clock. We are concerned with the way we start to look and feel and all sorts. But the best way to deal with your increasing age is to wear it well.

Age isn’t all bad, though. Some of the most desirable qualities come with age. We’re talking about perspective. We’re talking about wisdom. We’re talking about the experience. What we’re trying to say is, when you embrace the unavoidable fact you are always growing older, you can start to enjoy it more. As such, we have come up with a few ways to help you achieve the ultimate contentment and grow old with grace, style and, possibly even, some flair.

You Can Still Find New Things To Do
Life has a way of forcing us into routines whether we like it or not. We wake up at the same time, eat the same thing for breakfast, go to the same job, come home, eat the same dinner and go to bed at the same time. But when you grow old you are given a certain freedom (and perspective) to explore new things. Look for activities you’ve never tried. Go and excite you. Go and get scared. Go and laugh. It could be that you want to take a cruise. Or try parachuting. Or doing yoga or a private island in the Caribbean. Adventure is aimed at the youth, so why not break the mold and show the young guns who the boss is.

Look After That Temple Of Yours
Things may have started to go south, but that is natural with all bodies. What’s important to remember, is that it is the only body you’ll ever have, and that means you need to take care of it. Of course, this means supplying it with healthy meals that contain all the nutrients your body could need and chomp on foods that give you a burst of energy, but it also means other things do. The lovely people at floridamedicareadvantageplans.com explain how a great medical plan can help, while regular exercise is fantastic too. All if it will ensure your body feels as strong, sharp, smart and supporting as you need it to be.

Do What You Want To Do
Cat Stevens said it best, “From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.” And he was right. As we grow up, we are subjected to other people’s opinions, each of whom tried to guide us and shape us in their own image. Teacher, parents, grandparents, society, employers. It’s a barrage that we have to tolerate. But not anymore. Now is the time to figure out what you want to do, regardless of all the other swirling opinions. Do what makes you smile. Do things you care about. Be the change you want to see in the world. Do things that will make your jaw drop. Do things that will make your friends and family proud.

It’s Probably About Time To Forgive
Sorry seems to be the hardest word.” That’s just part of the pride most people feel because most people fail to realize that you can’t win any argument, ever. If you lose an argument with someone then you lose, and if you win and the argument you lose as well, because the other person will resent you for it. So now is the time to practice forgiveness. It will ensure you age with as much grace as possible. We’re not just talking about the forgiveness of other people, though. We’re also saying that you find a way to forgive yourself. Life is made up of a lot of years, and in that time we are bound to do things we aren’t proud of. But it is time to forgive yourself for them. You are human and humans make errors.

Feed Your Curiosity
Too many people see learning as a thing reserved for the young. You need to shake that thought because learning is what makes us better people. Learning is what makes us grow. And learning is something we do every day for the entirety of our lives. So embrace it. Be curious. Go and find out things you didn’t know. Open your mind to new ideas and cultures and opinions. It is part of growing old with grace. Keeping your mind closed, or refusing to take on board new information is what will give you the name of a grumpy old person. We once thought the world was flat, and we still would if it wasn’t for opening our minds and continually learning. Maybe it is time you learned about spirituality, or astronomy, or eastern culture, or your neighbor's political views. Maybe it’s time you saw the world. They won’t cause harm, but they could heal something. You were once a child that found curiosity in everything, from Lego blocks to chimneys to insects that wandered about in the garden. Don’t let that curiosity fade with age.

You Can’t Always Win
You may have realized this now, but failing is part of life. In fact, failing is one of the best parts of life. Failing is how we learn; it is how we improve, it is how we become gracious. What’s more, failing means that you had ambition and that you tried. That is why failing is so great. It shows us what is important, and the importance of trying to achieve your dreams (and it is never too late to try and achieve your dreams. Failing teaches us to get back on our feet, dust ourselves off and try again, this time taking a different tact. It is how we grow and become better people. So never stop failing, and never stop trying. It is part of life and one that should stick with us forever.
