Having a dairy allergy can be tough at times as it makes eating out a challenge. It can also make social events with friends difficult as I am usually not able to enjoy the delicious treats at the event. I have learned to have strong willpower as I don't want to have an asthma attack over a sweet treat like a cookie or doughnut. For the most part, I can easily say no to baked goods at social events and I have learned to bring my own food.
The one sweet treat that is very hard to resist is doughnuts as they are so tempting with their frosting and sprinkles, especially a glazed chocolate doughnut. I remember the last doughnut that I enjoyed a year ago. The pink glazed doughnut tasted so delicious but an hour later I was sick to my stomach and the asthmatic cough that made breathing difficult was a reminder that my dairy allergy is real.
Doughnuts made without milk are so delicious
Why can't doughnut shops make donuts without milk or butter? Sadly I have yet to discover a doughnut shop that makes a dairy-free donut. So I gave up trying to locate a donut shop that sells dairy-free donuts and I decided to make my own. My dairy-free doughnut recipe is not only delicious and tastes like the real thing but they are way lower in fat when compared to the ones you buy at the doughnut shop. So that is a win-win for me. Healthier doughnuts are a good thing!

The doughnut dough is so easy to make
The dairy-free doughnut dough is so easy to make. The donut dough is similar to making dough for bread or biscuits. You do have to allow time for the dough to rise. Trust me, you want the dough to rise so the doughnuts will be soft, fluffy, and tender.
Dairy-Free Homemade Doughnuts Are
+ Delicious
+ Easy to Make
+ Dairy-Free
+ Made with Plant-based Ingredients
+ Healthier
+ Have Less Fat
+ Made in the Airfryer
This doughnut recipe uses yeast and has to rise. That is what makes the doughnuts soft on the outside, yet fluffy and tender on the inside. One bite and you will fall in love with these doughnuts made without dairy products.
Not fried in oil, so they are healthier
Normal doughnuts that come from a donut shop are fried in oil. These doughnuts made without milk are made in an air fryer so they are healthier. The vegan butter adds a small amount of fat to the recipe but it is way less. A typical doughnut has 11 grams or more of fat while these low-fat doughnuts have around 3 grams of fat depending on the type of vegan butter that you use.
Things you need to make air fryer doughnuts
To make air fryer doughnuts, you will need an air fryer, I love my air fryer as it is great for making fish, potatoes, and 2 ingredient everything bagels. A stand mixer also comes in handy for baking doughnuts and more. A stand mixer is the best appliance for baking and I am glad that I splurged and bought a Kitchenaid mixer. This mixer is a time saver for baking and makes it easy for my son to help with the baking. Other useful items are staking baking racks and cookie cutters. I finally bought stacking racks to cool my cookies on and I love them. These cookie racks make glazing the doughnuts a breeze.

Dairy Free Homemade Doughnuts Made In The Air Fryer
Yield: 8
Air Fryer Doughnuts are way healthier and these are made without any dairy products. So now those with a dairy allergy can enjoy doughnuts.
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup warm water (between 100-115°F)
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup plant-based milk, like almond milk
- 4 tablespoons vegan butter
- 1 large egg, beaten
Doughnut glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 3-4 tablespoons water
Instructions:
- Heat water to 100°F in a small dish and add 1/2 teaspoon sugar and the yeast. Let rest 5 minutes.
- Measure dry ingredients into a mixer bowl.
- Melt the vegan butter in the microwave in a small dish. Let the butter cool down a bit and then stir in the almond milk.
- Once the yeast is frothy, add the yeast liquid and all the rest of the ingredients to the mixing bowl.
- Mix the dough until smooth, using a dough hook. You can also use a wooden spoon or your hands on a lightly floured surface.
- Place the doughnut dough in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap or a clean towel. Let this rise in a warm spot for an hour.
- Once the dough has doubled in size, place it on a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough out to 1/4" thickness. The using a 3" round cookie cutter or a drinking glass cut out the doughnuts. With a 1" round cookie cutter or a use a glass bottle that has a 1" circle, cut out the center of the doughnuts. Save the pieces to make doughnut holes.
- Cover the doughnuts with plastic wrap and then a kitchen towel. Let rest on board 30 minutes, until about doubled.
- Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place 4 doughnuts and 4 doughnut holes in the basket of the air fryer. (adjust the amount to your air fryer so the doughnuts do not touch each other.)
- Air fry at 300°F for about 5 minutes. Let the doughnuts cool on a rack before glazing them
- Mix sugar and water well, until no lumps of sugar remain. Dunk cooled doughnuts in glaze and set them back on the rack so the glaze can set. If you are using sprinkles make sure to add them before the glaze hardens.

YUM, and just one more reason I need to get an air fryer!
I think it's time to get an air fryer. I've heard many good things about it, plus I really miss some of the oil fryed food that I used to enjoy and now I avoid because it is unhealthy. Like doughnuts.
The recipe calls for 1/2 cup of sugar, but the instructions only mention 1/2 tsp - is the rest of the sugar supposed to get mixed in with the dry ingredients? thanks!
Thanks for pointing that out to me. Yes the rest of the sugar will go in with the rest of the ingredients.
A great desire to eat you, better than the commercial ones because they are homemade! I have to test myself and do them too!
Lookin' delicious! I'll try this for sure, MZ Chef! I really appreciate the fact that they are dairy free.
These look delicious! I had never thought to use an air fryer for doughnuts before! Very unique!
Holy goodness, these were much easier than I thought they were going to be. Absolute dairy-free perfection, if you ask me!

This is looking good! Air fryer is such a big help!
I am one of the lucky ones, as I do not have any allergies. But my friends kids both have dairy allergy, so whenever they come over for a visit I have to think what can I make so they could eat it. This recipe seems just great. It's safe for them and also on the healthy side.
OMG! These dairy free homemade doughnuts looks delicious! I love that it is made in an air fryer! I can't wait to try this!
I had no idea you can do doughnuts in an air fryer, that is sooooo cool! I will get one for sure.
I did a Google search and learned that if you use instant yeast instead of active yeast, you multiply the amount by.75. Will that work? Do you just add it to the dry ingredients or do you add water anyway?
I'm fully vegan, would it ruin the recipe if I make this without the egg??
Maybe try eeplacinf the egg with flaxseed? (Mix like 1-2 tablespoons into similar amount of lukewarm water and let sit for 10min until gooey and egglike.) Thats what i do for vegan baking sometimes
These doughnuts looks so delicious. Definitely a perfect treat to make for my kids.
I made them and they did not work. Anyone else actually make them? Everyone seems to just comment that they LOOK good.
Sorry to hear that they did not work for you. While they are not real donuts, oh how I miss real ones, they are a healthier option for those who have a dairy allergy.
What a great idea. I love that they're dairy free. I think these would be a great treat for the kids.
I need an air fryer. Each time I see these awesome recipes, I think, I need to get an air fryer. Making a sticky note right now!
Are these as airy as they look? I love alternative ingredient recipes!

I love that so much can be made in the Air Fryer now. I just got mine a few months and can't believe how much I use it.

This doughnut recipe looks great. It was easy to make and it was also gone quickly. There were no left overs in the house
This is amazing. I think I will buy an air fryer just for this. Thanks for sharing
That recipe looks delicious and I am pinning this next to try and make these this week for my kids!
Eggs???? Hardly healthy or vegan😳
This is literally not a real recipe. If someone actually makes it, it comes out to a batter consistency. Impossible to roll out.
Sometimes adding more flour to the dough can help
I never said they were vegan, just dairy-free. Also they are healthier as they are not fried like regular ones
