My favorite plant-based snack is hummus and crackers. Hummus is a creamy dip that hails from the Middle East and has a reputation as a clean, healthy food. It deserves it. All the main ingredients are superfoods in their own right. Most traditional hummus recipes are made with chickpeas, sesame paste (tahini), garlic, and olive oil. All these ingredients are healthy foods and some of them ~ chickpeas and tahini ~ are loaded with protein. So grab a bowl of hummus and get snacking!

Keep reading to discover a hummus recipe made with spicy Harissa chile sauce. The main ingredients of Harissa are roasted red peppers, Baklouti peppers, spices, and herbs such as garlic paste, caraway seeds, coriander seeds, cumin, and olive oil. This red chile sauce gives the hummus a flavorful spicy taste.

Hummus is:

What is tahini?

Making homemade hummus is super easy and once you learn how you may never buy store-bought hummus. The main ingredient in this delicious Middle Eastern spread is chickpeas and tahini. Tahini is a creamy nutrient-rich spread made from sesame seeds, making it an allergy-friendly spread for those who have nut allergies. Tahini is also the perfect food for Passover and this delicious spread can be used in so many recipes. I love using sesame seeds in my homemade honey sunflower seed butter.

My favorite tahini is an all-natural, squeeze-and-serve tahini made by Mighty Sesame. Mighty Sesame Tahini is the best tahini that you can buy. Their squeezable bottle makes it easier than ever to add tahini to everything from dressings and dips to meat and veggies. With no stirring required, the sesame seed tahini is packed with protein and contains 260mg of calcium per serving.  Mighty Sesame is also organic, vegan, gluten- and dairy-free, OU kosher, and halal.

Add heat and zip to traditional hummus

When I discovered that Mighty Sesame added a harissa-flavored tahini to their brand, I had to try it in my favorite hummus recipe. This new variety contains a blend of 100% natural harissa spices for a distinctively aromatic flavor profile with a kick. You can buy this amazing Harissa tahini on Amazon.

What is harissa?

Harissa is a paste made by blending roasted hot red peppers with other spices and herbs. This spicy paste is popular in Israel, Moroccan, and Tunisian. This fragrant chili paste adds awesome flavor and heat to your favorite foods. So I knew that harissa-flavored tahini would add a nice flavorful kick of heat to my homemade hummus recipe.

When it comes to desserts, I think my favorite dessert is cookies. I am a cookie person and love cookies. The problem with most cookies is that they are made with dairy products, which is a big no-no for me. Since discovering that dairy was the cause of my severe asthma attacks through an elimination diet and a food allergy blood test, I do not consume dairy products. That includes butter and milk, which are the main ingredients in most cookie recipes. So in order to enjoy cookies, I have to bake cookies from scratch.

Vegan baking substitutes

It is good that I enjoy baking cookies. I have been baking cookies for a long time since I was a kid. The only difference in my baking today is that I have to swap out the dairy ingredients in the cookie recipes for vegan ingredients. Vegan recipes do not contain any dairy. So I now use vegan butter in my best Christmas sugar cookie recipe and vegan chocolate chips in my soft pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. I also use plant-based milk in my sweet biscuits for strawberry shortcake recipe. I have discovered that dairy-free baking is easy and delicious.

Making peanut butter cookies with grandma

I think the first cookie recipe that I ever made was peanut butter cookies. I think I was probably 4 years old at the time, and I remember making peanut butter cookies with my grandma. My older siblings would go to school, and I would head down the stairs to my grandma's house.

My grandma would let me help her mix up the peanut butter cookie dough, and then she would give me a fork. I would then carefully dip the fork into the flour and then place the fork on the cookie dough balls. I have fond memories of making the criss-cross patterns on the balls of peanut butter cookie dough. I also remember tasting the sweet raw cookie dough, something that kids can't do today for fear of salmonella.

No eggs or oil needed for these cookies

With this vegan cookie recipe, you can sample the raw cookie dough since it has no eggs in the recipe. This plant-based cookie recipe also uses no butter or oil. It is an easy cookie recipe that can be made in one bowl. You don't even have to worry about the order of the ingredients since there is no butter to be creamed. Just place all the vegan ingredients into one bowl and mix them up.

Since there is no oil in the recipe, the plant-based ingredients are easy to mix up with your hands as it leaves no greasy mess on your hands. This cookie dough forms into the texture of play dough.

Use your hands or a stand mixer

The cookie dough is easy to make with a stand mixer. If you don't have a KitchenAid mixer in your kitchen, then it is perfectly fine to use your hands to mix up the cookie dough. Some may think that mixing up ingredients with your hands is nasty, but just wash your hands.

The heat of the oven will kill any germs while the cookies are baking. I think mixing up cookie dough with my hands is relaxing, like kneading bread dough. If you like baking bread, you need to make this honey whole wheat bread recipe that is awesome for sandwiches.
